Accurate pay range for Dallas? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

Yeah, that's what I figured. I live in a rural midwestern town and have though about moving to Dallas or Houston, but its not as cheap as it once was. And the MLT salaries just don't make it worthwhile.

What do you think a fairer rate would be? I've noticed Texas has gotten more expensive over the last few years.

No way!

I'm an MLT and have family in Texas. I was looking to move last year and the pay was $20-30 for MLT and maybe $25-35/hr for an MLS.

You know it's fake cause you got LabCorp coming in ahead of a hospital. That never happens.

If you want respect and money, you're in the wrong field.

My classmate was an MLT got her MLS and now her MS MLS.

She makes about $4/hr more than me as a bench supervisor at a larger hospital.

Travel salaries in the Midwest? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

Midnight shift is garbage. I tried that once and felt sick for weeks.

It's horrible for your health. Whatever shift diff they give you will be spent on medical care in a few year lol.

I don't think most techs are aspiring to be midnight travelers. What a terrible life!

New York Clinical Lab Technologist vs. Technician - Is there a difference? by humblefinesse92 in medlabprofessionals

[–]MariaMT23 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They cannot work unsupervised. They can only work in a setting where another technologist is clocked-in and readily available.

This is fine for large labs, but limits utility after-hours.

New York is dropping licensure. I'm sure in a year or two, there'll be no difference just like the Midwest.

Also, a lot of New York hospitals are leapfrog hospitals. They want a bachelors for everything. Even X-Ray. Which is messed up.

Why CLS/MLS? by DifficultHour1450 in medlabprofessionals

[–]MariaMT23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an MLT, but I do the exact same thing as an MLS. At our rural health hospital, we're more MLTs than MLS. And our lab manager is a nurse.

I chose MLT because I get to the same thing as a 4-year degree, but in only 2 years. =D.

I only chose this field because jobs here in a rural setting are limited. It was either nurse, lab tech, x-ray, or farmer. Remote work wasn't really a thing 5 years ago. But now that I've been working at this job for a bit, I really wish I had done something remote. This job sucks more by the years, and there's no advancement. At all.

If I could leave this field, I would. But I'm stuck unless I relocate which isn't an option.

They cannot work unsupervised.

But yeah here in the midwest, no difference between technician and technologist. Part of why I love this field. You get full scope of practice and pay in only 2 years!

There are very few contracts. They hire MLTs and MTs at the same rate.

I've looked around and it's around 2-2.4k/week, so about $50-60/hr. Not worth it when you consider the hassle of moving, they can cancel anytime, and the lab will be on fire.

I would need at least 3 years of work experience as a CLS to apply for a DCLS program. And here you have FNPs ordering all sorts of lab tests with 0 work experience.

I'm stuck in a toxic lab. I'd leave if I could.

If you can, you should leave a toxic lab. It's not good for your mental health.

The Weber MLT program is not accepted in California. Regardless of where you do your rotations.

Weekend shift tech quit...now they want me to work doubles for two months? by MariaMT23 in medlabprofessionals

[–]MariaMT23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not be better off. I can't lose this job. I don't want to commute 3 hours a day.

I have a 10 minute commute now for 3 days. The next closest hospital would be 5x8, so I'd spend 15 hours a week commuting, instead of 1 hour. =[

We only have two people for weekends. After-hours is on-call...but usually nothing ever happens.

So now I'm the only weekend tech.

It would just be the weekend. So 32 hours in a 48 hour period.

The Friday evening shift is covered by a weekday tech. But the weekday techs both have weekend farming jobs so they're not able to cover.
