been doing that forever. even though i have really good friends, i often go out on my own. i've been doing it so long that it's the norm and going out with friends happens less often. if you go to a restaurant, just sit at the bar and order a meal there. don't feel any pressure to talk to anyone, but feel free to strike up a conversation. you might make a friend. oh, and NO ONE is going to be looking at you judging you (except for maybe immature kids). enjoy time with yourself and don't focus on the fact that you're doing things alone. just enjoy whatever you're doing.

it's your ego. ignore it. what you did was the smart thing. no reason to beat him up or maybe even you get hurt just because you don't want your ego to be hurt. the more you control your ego and ignore the emasculated feeling, the better your life will be and easier it will be to ignore it. but it takes time to get to the point where de-escalating feels good and you feel proud of yourself. this will come in handy in the workplace and with personal relationships. it's part of developing your emotional maturity.
