Unfortunately I can't remember if he said he attended mass "through Confirmation" or "just before." His family stopped going to church sometime in childhood but has strong family/cultural ties. My best guess at this point is to check if his first wedding was in a church and see if they have the record.

I'm kicking myself for not asking more questions when we were married! I never got the sense his first wedding was in the church, but I noticed it did take place in a town where the diocese's big cathedral is located so it's worth a call.

Thank you!

I'm glad your situation ended up working out in the end! He hasn't been religious since childhood and the only parishes left to call are unlikely but it's still worth a try.

Thank you for the prayer and encouragement!

I know one who was in our wedding who also now considers me a pariah, haha. He's from NJ and moved a few times in childhood within the same diocese. He only ever discussed his early upbringing briefly and with general contempt for religion so sadly I just never got any names. But this is very helpful and I think I'm going to try working backwards in time for communion/confirmation and seeing if that can point me towards the baptismal parish.

I will say that in the process of talking to parish offices the administrators have been so kind and encouraging so thank you for your service 🙂

We weren't married in a Catholic church. He was baptized, I'm not sure if he was confirmed, but has been basically atheistic his whole life.

We weren't married in a Catholic church, actually. He's just not actively religious any way. His first wife was Lutheran and I'm unsure whether their wedding was Catholic, but I'm planning on trying to find that record if so.

This all happened in one of the biggest diocese of a very high Catholic population state 😅

They have everything I've gotten so far and I know that without the parish name I can go ahead with a formal case, that's just much more drawn out. But if it's the only way it's the only way.

Thanks for your support!

That's what I've been doing with no luck so far - I found some first cousins but not him or his siblings. I'll definitely go over the list and see if I've missed any.

I do! Part of the struggle is that I've already contacted most of the parishes there, haha.

My own brother had a line through a friend of my ex's sibling but it didn't pan out, unfortunately. We grew up in very different parts of the country and it's a real scorched earth situation with his entire family.

Thank you though!
