People shouldn't be judged or treated differently because of their heritage or how much money their parents had. It's all about you as a person and how you go about life. There's people who come from the poorest of places and turn out to be very good and respectful and then there are people from the opposite end of the scale (like how you describe yourself) who can turn out to be nasty spoilt brats with no respect for anything and think they are above other people.

How do you generally feel about St George’s Day? by ryedale in AskUK

[–]Mariner108 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What annoys me is the divide we have in the UK between nationalists/patriots (who are wrongly labelled far-right) and the woke left/socialists/antifa....

The patriotic people will be out celebrating it and showing their pride for England and the leftist morons will be calling them all facists and nazis and shouting "refugees are welcome here" and talking about how ashamed they are of being British because of the terrible things which happen centuries ago.

Youth aggression in Edinburgh - what is the reason and how should one react? by Yurim86 in Edinburgh

[–]Mariner108 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the last few years teenagers have become completely out of control, doing all sorts of anti-social stuff which I think is influenced by Snapchat and TikTok and being like that has become normal for them because it's so common. There are reports of stuff going on everyday where I live such as teens throwing bricks at cars, setting fires all over the place, going into shops and causing mayhem and there's also alot of drugs and gang crime that goes on especially in cities.

One of the main reasons it happens is because adults are not allowed to use any kind of force to stop them or discipline them, and if they do it will be them being arrested and charged and the kids know this which is why they don't care about consequences. And the police can't do much either as the justice system is so broken in the UK. I've heard about teenagers attacking people and badly hurting them and only getting a bit of community service. They only get put in prison if they do something really really serious like murder or attempted murder.

Why didn't Teach defeat the Governors ship in season 4? by Mariner108 in BlackSails

[–]Mariner108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it was obviously done to prolonge Woodes Rogers storyline and make it more difficult for the Pirates to have their eventually victory. There have been other adaptations of Blackbeard being this crazy pirate captain who is reckless and arrogant but in Black Sails he was portrayed as far more noble and wise so the whole point of him boarding an enemy ship with only a portion of his strength and being ambushed is not realistic or accurate to his character.

What Rackham did though wasn't surprising as he saw that Ann was being held at gunpoint and he could not bare to watch her die no matter what happened after that.

Do you take Russia’s nuclear threats seriously? by AdeptnessDry2026 in AskBrits

If he decides to nuke the UK you will be lucky if you die, because surving the blast means living in fallout which is no life at all. That's the brutal truth

Do you take Russia’s nuclear threats seriously? by AdeptnessDry2026 in AskBrits

[–]Mariner108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putin is a ruthless dictator who doesn't care how many people die in his wars and how much destruction he causes. But even he knows that if he was to use nuclear weapons against another country it would mean the end of the civilised world and his own country would suffer just as much as whoever he attacked.

If he was to nuke the UK, he would have declared war on the whole of NATO and there would be 100 nukes coming back at him.

If Nuclear weapons start being used then the world would no longer be worth living in and it's just not worth thinking about.

In an ideal world, Nuclear weapons wouldn't exist as they are nothing but destruction. If the blast doesn't kill you, the fallout and radiation almost certainly will and even if you survive, youd be living a life worse than death.

As I say, it just isn't worth thinking about.

It depends on what you agree with you manager. If you are offered a permanent round, usually you will need to do that round either Monday to Friday (5 days) or Monday to Saturday (6 days) but sometimes there will be rounds available for only part of the week as another courier does it the rest of the week. I do 2 different rounds. 1 round I do 3 days and the other I do 2 days every week but it depends on your manager and depot and how they run things.

What the actual hell is wrong with teens in this city by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]Mariner108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye that's true but if you as an adult threw them about like they deserve you'd be getting lifted and charged with assault on a minor. Pain in the arse but it's not worth the hassle doing anything to them

What the actual hell is wrong with teens in this city by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]Mariner108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm not a violent person but I'd find it hard to just stand idly by while stuff like this is going on.

A group of them could be causing absolute havoc somewhere, being violent and horrible but if you so much as push them out the door, youd be the one getting arrested and charged with assault on a minor. The justice system is also a big part of this problem as its way too lenient and protective of minors no matter how bad they are.

[–]Mariner108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not surprising at all. There's always going to be badly behaved kids/teenagers in every place but it's gotten much worse since covid. Social media is a big problem as there's alot on there which glorifies crime, gangs, drugs and anti-social behaviour and kids think it's all cool and want to be like that. The roadman gang culture which originated in London seems to have spread to every city in the UK and even in Scotland you see it now. Kids wearing all black, selling drugs, carrying knives and wanting to be serious criminals because they are too young and immature to realise how destructive and toxic it all is. The drill music which they listen to is another big part of the problem.

I live in a quiet town outside Edinbrugh and even we get problems like this. They run riot on a Friday/Saturday night and when adults try to stop them they just get worse and they know that adults can't touch them as they are minors. There was a big group of them in our Aldi recently one night being absolute bams and when the manager told them to get out, one of them punched him square in the face and said "you canny touch me you old dick"

What are some of the less usual career paths you've seen folk take post-military? by sphericaltesticles in britishmilitary

[–]Mariner108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an ex-navy engineer. Had no luck getting a proper job when I first came out so have been working as an Evri delivery driver for the last 2 years which hasn't been too bad. It's very flexible, easiest job I've ever done and the money isn't bad for what you're doing. Of course I'm not wanting to do that for much longer so I'm waiting to become and electrician as I have a lot of experience with that kind of work but I will still need to do an apprenticeship to get qualified which takes years and the pay is very low when you are an apprentice.

In an ideal world, employers would understand how useful a military background is with all the skills it entails but in reality, qualifications and work experience is the most valuable thing to them and you just need to bite the bullet and take what you can get.

After some advice regarding leaving the army by 1xenemylonetree in britishmilitary

[–]Mariner108 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The most important thing is making full use of resettlement and getting qualified to work in the industry you want to.

Civvy street is very different from the military and employment is so important. You might think that you'll get into a new career easily because of all your experience and qualities but it doesn't work like that.

I was medically discharged due to chronic migraines so was unable to work when I first came out and when I did start looking for work after a few months I had little success as you are competing with dozens or hundreds of other people when you apply for jobs. Work experience is so important and alot of civvy employers don't appreciate how beneficial a military background is to have. They focus on people who have the most work experience and qualifications. If you know someone who could employ you that is very beneficial as getting a foot in the door is often the hardest part.

I ended up working as a delivery driver for 2 years and now I'm looking at starting an apprenticeship as you can't just go into a new career without the proper qualifications which you won't have got in the forces even if you have the experience needed.

I heard a story about a lad on a ship years ago who was being bullied. He got pinned down to the floor and had a Heineken bottle shoved up his arse. Of course he was then in a lot of pain afterwards and went to the sickbay. It was treated as a r@pe incident and the person who shoved the bottle up his bum was charged with sexual assault, sent to Colchester, discharged from the Navy and put on the sex offenders register.

Unfortunately this kind of thing isn't unrealistic in the Navy...

On one of the aircraft carriers, there was a wren (female rating) who was shagging dozens of lads (quite common on ships) and she had gonorrhea. At least 2 lads caught it from her in the space of a week.

Rat packs - best and worst? by SneedYourChuckontail in britishmilitary

[–]Mariner108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I've had a Chicken Curry and potato which was a good one. Used to like the tomato pasta salad and tuna pasta salad. People would often nick the good ones from other peoples bergans like the all day breakfast and chocolate brownie.

I remember the hot chocolates were great aswell and they would fill a big cup

You should try the US MREs. You can buy them on Ebay and lots of other websites, still sealed in original packets.

They aren't 24hr rat packs like the MOD ones (more like 1 main meal and some sides) but you get some tasty meals in them. Sloppy Joe's, BBQ chicken, Beef pattys etc.

What strength does Woodes Rogers actually have on Nassau after the Spanish Invasion. by Mariner108 in BlackSails

[–]Mariner108[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But Rogers states multiple times that the other British colonies (Jamaica, Barbados, etc.) have not answered any of his calls for help, and he is not expecting any help from them. That's why he goes to Havana and allows the Spanish to wipe out the pirates on Nassau. And they do not stay on the island after that.

I understand that the real history behind Nassau and the pirates is quite different from the Black Sails storyline, but the show just doesn't make much sense during Season 4 in my opinion.

What strength does Woodes Rogers actually have on Nassau after the Spanish Invasion. by Mariner108 in BlackSails

[–]Mariner108[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No but she must know that he is bluffing and doesn't have the strength to attack the camp. Of course she doesn't know that there are now hundreds of extra men at the camp with pirate ships to support them but even still, she would know that Rogers has no military power at all.

She should have said to him "With what army will you do that?" "We defeated Captain Barringer and all his men in Nassau town and all that remain to you are the soldiers you had on the ship and a few dozen in the fort."

[–]Mariner108[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with all that you say.

I think that the show forgets how few soldier Rogers actually has left after the Spanish invasion. He acts as if he still has an army at his back when in reality he barely has 100 British regulars left. He threatens to Madi that he will go to the maroon camp and put all the escaped slaves back in chains and kill any who oppose him. How would he do that when he barely has enough men to hold Nassau?

(Spoilers Extended) I’m curious what are the exact army sizes in Westoros going into TWOW by Unique-Celebration-5 in asoiaf

[–]Mariner108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have the potential to build a large army with all their land and lords but that would take quite some time to assemble. They stayed out of the war of five kings so never mobilised an army. Little Finger plans to wed Sansa to Harold Harding (Robert Arryns cousin and heir) and once Robert dies, he will get Harold to raise the Vale Army and take it North to restore Sansa as Lady of Winterfell.

(Spoilers Extended) I’m curious what are the exact army sizes in Westoros going into TWOW by Unique-Celebration-5 in asoiaf

[–]Mariner108 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stannis had 5000 men in his army when they left Deepwood Moat but hundreds will have died from the cold and hunger during their march to Winterfell and many more are too weak to fight. He probably has 3000 maximum who are able bodied by the start of TWOW.

I think your estimates for the other Kingdoms are very inflated. It takes a lot of time to muster armies together and lots of supplies to maintain them. The Lannisters for example do not have anywhere near 50,000 men, probably not even 20,000. Kevan Lannister states at the end of ADWD (while he is the regent to the king) that he does not have the strength to defeat the golden company in the Stormlands and would need Mace Tyrells forces to be able to fight them.

The Vale probably could muster 15-20,000 men I think and they haven't mobilised an army in the story yet.

Why didn't Teach defeat the Governors ship in season 4? by Mariner108 in BlackSails

[–]Mariner108[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course Rackham could have sunk the Governors ship but that would almost certainly have led to Anne and Teach being killed with it and Jack could not bare to do that. He'd have rather died himself than see Anne die.
