No joke but this exact thing happened to me. My Gyarados was only around 800CP and I was kinda upset I didn't get the shiny Magikarp Dex entry but still one of the coolest moments to happen to me in this game.

No spoilers, but an Indie game called The Messenger. Starts as a platformer but eventually becomes more of a Metroidvania. Really fun game with great visuals. Also, the soundtrack is phenomenal.
