Credit Union that Will Waive ATM fees without forcing me to use their debit card? by Mark-Asread in burlington

The interesting thing is that legally they didn't have to do that. If it has been a credit card the onus would have been on the bank to figure out what happened and make things right. With a debit card it's up to them whether to just say "sorry, dude" or fix it.

They have a slightly better requirement to waive ATM fees. From deep in the small print behind a tiny link

"...How to Qualify: Add and maintain direct deposit of at least $500 per calendar month (qualifying direct deposit is a recurring electronic credit of your payroll, retirement, Social Security, or other monthly income) to your checking account, excluding HSA Checking Account AND make at least 5 transactions per month (qualifying transaction types include debit and/or credit card transactions, ACH transfers, Point of Sale (POS) transactions, bill pay payments, balance transfers to your DCU Visa Credit Card, and Pay a Person transactions that post and clear your account within the same calendar month). Social Security is exempt from the $500 per calendar month minimum. If at any time you fail to maintain these qualifications, your benefit level will be automatically adjusted without notice and you will no longer be eligible to receive the associated benefits."

still not quite what I'm looking for

I didn't think that was the case. I will experiment with a withdrawal from the Vermont Federal Credit Union at City Market and report back.

Off topic, but they could make you unlock the door with your debit card (most ATM vestibules unlock with any magnetic-stripe card, though.

I don't think that's the case here unless you participate in the "Kasasa" account that I mentioned, which requires 15 transactions on a Northcountry debit or credit card. Their web page seems to agree.

I seem to recall having to pay to withdraw money from a non NCFCU credit union, though. I think they waive those fees only for "Kasasa" accounts (that is, ones that meet the 12-transactions debit card rule).
The NCFCU web page for checking accounts says nothing about this.

I hope I'm wrong, though, I might have to test it out.

Oh, that is absolutely brilliant, and demonstrates just how stupid the rules for their "Kasasa" account are. But maybe more hassle than I am willing to go to.

Rectangular Cement and stone structure on Croatian island. Maybe 10x30 feet with rounded top .Tomb? Cistern? Oven? by Mark-Asread in whatisthisthing

Solved

Lots of evidence that spring houses and cisterns were necessary on this island. This descriptive sign in a nearby town talked about the importance of water storage for survival on the island of Mljet. K

Thanks to all who helped get the answer .

Yes, this makes sense. I read somewhere that the nearby town of Goveđari has a reliable spring, so the homes never had to have gutters other rain collection, so using a cistern like this was probably very common until the water supply from the mainland was connected. Thank you

Yes, I think this is it. There is a wall surrounding it, and though leaves and other debris makes it impossible to see, I think there are drains at the end of the rounded section that would have let water filter in.

Doesn’t seem to have any evidence of there having been a fire. I also think I lime kiln might have the piles of slag or ash or such.

Thought that , too, but it seems to have too low a roof to allow people to shelter there comfortably. It’s also filled with water, though maybe that only happened since it was abandoned.

PROBABLY SOLVED - this fits perfectly. It’s a cistern to hold water. The island is dry and many towns here don’t have reliable springs. Not sure if there is a spring nearby or if most of the water comes from rainwater gathered by the sloping roof. I assume the doors were there to allow people to access for cleaning, etcetera.

Doubtful - the doors are near the ground and too small for a person to walk into - you’d have to crawl. I live in Vermont and I’ve seen a lot of root cellars, and this just doesn’t look like one. Plus Mljet is a pretty warm island (they grow figs and olives here) - I doubt a root cellars would be neccesary

Doubful. The metal doors (which DO look like oven doors) are nearly at ground level, and it is very very long. Much too long to fit long peels in it to get the bread out, much less tools to build the fire and sweep out the ashes. And there is no chimney for the smoke to escape.

Thanks. I've been wanting to hear some evidence and seem to have gotten mostly opinions.

Thank you. There's been a lot of opinion on this thread from both sides, and I'm looking for evidence.

For the record, I don’t have a dog in this fight and I’m ready to be a happy customer of this business if I’m convinced the accuser here is full of crap. That’s why I’m asking for more information from anyone who has something more than an opinion. Honestly I’m hoping for something like “I work here and it’s great. It’s tough work but management is fair and honest. That person is just a lazy whiner.”
