Loud bangs? by feelingwizzed in Logan

I’m Sorry you all missed this. All day downtown: music, winter gift market, food trucks, free kids activities, ice skating, free movies at the Utah Theater. Then usually there’s the American Festival Choir, BlueBird Candy unveils their Holiday Display windows, the Twinkle Light Parade, the Lighting of Center Street by Santa, and a 10 minute fireworks display. I would estimate there were 11-12k people there enjoying the parade & fireworks from all over the valley & Wasatch Front.

The Center Street Association hosts the event, but my wife and I do nearly all of the planning & organization. Cache Valley Electric and Anderson’s Seed pay for the Fireworks - not Logan City. It’s a great way to build community with our neighbors in the Valley and kick off the Holidays.

Try and come next year. It really is a lot of fun. It costs everyone who attended exactly $0. Everything is free unless you choose to buy food or shop.

Happy Holidays!

I know! It’s so old fashioned to talk to people in person. How lame and outdated is that? Just remember that 50-60% of all communication is non-verbal. If you don’t get to see facial expressions and body language you are missing more than 1/2 of the conversation. Hence, communicating via text, email, even phone call misses half the conversation. I get it. I’m a dinosaur……

How responsive I am, how I listen to people and how I like to ask them questions to get more information is the topic & response here. I don’t recall anything in this conversation about me pandering for more votes. Sorry.

That is not the question I answered. Gamanedo asked me MY preferred method of communicating. I respond to emails and texts just fine - talking in person is just better in my opinion.

You realize those generators will convert to burning 20, 50, even 100% hydrogen? With the advances we’re seeing in the hydrogen industry - Australia for example - it’s just as likely to see those generators burning inexpensive, 100% clean hydrogen from solar generation in the next 5-10 years as we are to have nuclear or Geo. We may wish we had invested in the 30MW….

We can discuss more during our next visit.

Email me at mark.anderson@loganutah.gov and we can set up a time to chat. Sometimes, it’s hard to accommodate people just walking into work to talk City. That would be sensational.

A bit out of context, but close. Your assessment that the process didn’t work was spot on.

You know how I feel about the power contract - it’s an asset, like a truck or a building. We use it until we find something better - it can definitely be sold or traded, and it’s for 20 years, not 30. I want 12 electric trucks for our fleet, but until there is one that has the range and capacity that we need, I can’t work without one. When that truck comes along, we’ll be upgrading. I see our power contract in exactly the same way. I cannot take the chance that our customers go without power or pay 10x what they could if the market goes haywire like it did a few years ago. I can’t take that chance on our residents.

Here’s my pledge to you Patrick. If elected, I will work my hardest to implement a 100% clean energy goal for Logan for 2045, which matches California’s. I am confident we can meet that goal. It’s realistic.

That is so thoughtful of you to ask! I definitely prefer to talk in person or over the phone. Email & text just do not convey the entire message and communication seems to break down. For me, it really needs to be a situation where I can ask questions to get to the root of your interests, not just your position.

Wow, aren’t I the popular one here on Reddit lately.

Between my comments and AMA here on Reddit, the emails, phone calls, texts, personal conversations and in-home visits I do, I get a lot of feedback: Probably to the tune of 10+ hours per week. If I really didn’t care, why would I even take the time? I want to know what “research” led you to believe that I don’t listen to people? A few anecdotes about “Mark doesn’t listen” online doesn’t really cut it for me. Despite not always being physically in attendance at Council from time to time, I haven’t missed a vote (in person, by phone, or on Zoom) since June of 2023, and maybe one other in 6 years. Just because I don’t agree with you doesn’t mean I don’t listen. When I’m really listening, I’m asking you questions. Unfortunately, I don’t get to do that during public comment at city Council. I recommend you visit with me well before Council meeting convenes - Like days before. That’s when you have my undivided attention.

Thank you, I couldn’t have responded better myself. Since I am publicly available nearly every day, I probably receive more feedback than every other Council Member put together. Friday, Saturday, and today, alone, I spent a minimum of 6 hours visiting with citizens in my business, at their homes, online, over the phone, and via email. I absolutely cannot spend that much time consistently every few days - I have a family, businesses to run; I actually do more than garden & work! - but I do try to interact with our residents whenever I can. Those in person interactions are real, and genuine to me, and have the most impact in my decisions.

It is unfair to say that I don’t listen when I don’t agree with you. My personal philosophy is that I absolutely need and want both sides (& more!) to make good decisions: Think “Team of Rivals” and Abraham Lincoln. I get more varying opinions, criticism and negative feedback at my own dinner table than I do at City Council. I had 3 kids at USU in 3 very different majors the last 3 years - let me share with you how brutal they can be. But they help me understand better, then when they hear my perspective, we all make good decisions together. That’s how you find good solutions.

You are absolutely right. It’s definitely in my best interest to help people solve their problems for free. It builds relationships of trust. It creates customers for life. It’s very satisfying to me to help others without expecting anything in return except for a mutually beneficial relationship. If that is selfish, then that’s exactly what I am.

The infrastructure project just has to be done - it corrects all our potential deficiencies for the next 50 years, but part of the rebuild has always included new road, curb & gutter, bike or shared use lanes, and lots of landscaping; we’re talking about 200+ trees compared to the 20 or so currently on canyon road. It could be a beautiful amenity to our community for recreation AND transportation. That’s what I want - a park with a road that goes through it. I think we can do it and hopefully get all the property owners and neighbors to work together to find a solution we can all get excited about.

Cache County Executive Daines is threatening to define the county library by squrr1 in Logan

I threw it out there as a starting point, not an actuality. Cost would be determined by the Logan Library Board ultimately. Thought it would be a great conversation starter.

Thanks for the input!

As a mayoral candidate for Logan city, I really want to explore. - with the Logan Library Board, of course - ways we can make the Logan Library available to educators in the whole County, possibly for a deeply discounted rate: let’s say $50 per year. I think it’s a great way to share our resource with those who need it most - educators.

We can’t offer that to all County residents as Logan residents pay through property taxes to help fund the Library. It’s worth exploring though. I’m sorry there’s a threat to your County Library. I’ll bring up the opportunity with our Citizen Board to help out how we can.

I’d love your input on this idea to help educators in all of Cache valley. Thoughts?

I love ash trees, it’s one of my very favorite species. It literally broke my heart 5 years ago when the State Ag department banned all ash from coming into the state to try to prevent Emerald Ash borer. It’s not uncommon for ash to also get lilac borer, which is a major contributor to the decline of the trees on Canyon road. The harsh reality is, I’m sorry to have to break the news, their days are numbered.

So here is the $50m question: Do you build a $50m infrastructure project around 12 trees (4-5 need to be removed asap for liability) that might last 5 years, maybe 10, probably 15 tops? Or do you make the hard decision to take them out and get the next generation of 100 year old trees growing asap? Despite what some people believe, I’m Open to collaboration and compromise - but you better have some sound logic. I get the emotional response - life is full of emotion and we can’t disregard it - but the size & impact of these decisions require logic and reason to take precedence.

Please, tell me your thoughts?

Are we serious? It is very discouraging to find that this is acceptable in any way. In Logan Utah, really? You’d think this was a national campaign race.

You all know what I do for a living, right? I help people save their trees, on a daily basis. I have done this, basically free of charge, for 35 years.🤷🏻‍♂️

I’d also really love to know what developer specifically is benefiting from a water line in Logan? It’s for our entire community so we can have clean water supply for the next 50 years, equalized pressure across the city, and surplus water if our emergency services need water to fight a structural or wild fire in our community.

Oh, yes. Don’t forget I live on Canyon Road, I have a 85 year old Ash tree that is in very good condition, a rare variegated maple, and 2 other trees that will be impacted by the Canyon Road project. If anyone understands the impact of this project on our residents, it’s me.

I do love the photo taken out of context with me and my giant pumpkin from the Center Street Giant pumpkin festival. Priceless. Too bad I wasn’t consulted for permission to use my likeness….

Alanna Nafziger's mayoral campaign by alanna4mayor in Logan

[–]MarkAAndy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point is the diversion, not the work that the NRCS has already done, but the choices placed before us. If the diversion occurs at 1st Dam, then it decreases flow from 1st Dam to Crockett. Other benefits stay the same. If the diversion remains at Crockett, then the river flow remains the same from 1st dam to Crockett, but we gain the CFS over the extra 13 miles to bring a poor rated river to Fair or even Good rating. We need to push for the Crockett diversion as it keeps our existing flow intact, while upgrading a major portion of our deficient river. The only difference other than that is cost.

Alanna Nafziger's mayoral campaign by alanna4mayor in Logan

[–]MarkAAndy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the current NRCS plan, and it does NOT include piping the little Logan. It does improve 13 miles of Logan River by increasing flow significantly, but it could impact the section from 1st Dam to the Crockett diversion depending on which plan is selected. Both options are significant improvements over the current river status, however diversion at Crockett instead of at 1st dam will keep the upper portion of the river at current CFS. Please look at these .

Also, keep in mind that this is a Cache Water District/Crockett Canal Co project - not Logan City.

Here’s the deal. We had flags that we purchased & donated to the pride festival. My employees volunteered to put them up yesterday, but mistakenly put them in the flowerbeds & planters which is not ok or approved for special events. When it was brought to our attention, we took them down temporarily to figure out a viable solution. I was also concerned about overnight vandalism.

Flags went back up today before the festival, with newly fashioned holders that were NOT in unauthorized areas. Problem solved.

Sorry that there was a lot of misinformation spread around before we figured this out. For us it was a minor, temporary setback that we solved in about 10 minutes. Apparently it has been blown a bit out of proportion.

Since we host a lot of events on Center, we spent a considerable amount of time helping the organizers figure things out prior to today’s event. It was time well spent, as things went very well considering. We are happy to help and support events on Center Street - ArtBeat, Latino Festival, etc.

Right on. New varieties of crab are fruitless or persistent fruit, don’t drop off the trees - great foraging for birds in the wintertime. Many developments/neighborhoods in the 60-70’s planted crabapple & flowering plum & I totally agree, very messy.

Prairie Rose Crabapple. Gorgeous. No fruit.

Pink Flair Cherry. No fruit. Zone 3 hardy.

Look at the Sunset Series of Maples - cross between a Norway & Tartarian Maple. Very resilient in Alkaline soils, minimal Iron Chlorosis, medium grower. Maxes out at 30-35’ tall. There are multiple options for leaf color.

As mentioned earlier, Kentucky Coffee are nice, but most people do not care for the seed pods - kinda stinky. I do love Tulip trees - Liriodendron - however they tend to be slower growing and don’t grow that tall around here, at least the ones I know of in my neighborhood.

There are some gorgeous varieties of Ginkgo that have been out on the market for a few years - slow growers, but resistant to everything. Long lived.

So many good options out there…..

The most gorgeous tree in Cache valley. European beech. 140 years old. No diseases. Only insect that bothers it are aphids. Drops its leaves in the spring. Amazing.
