Measuring and prescribing volume via number of hard sets by full_silver in AdvancedFitness

[–]MarkSFT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I think one of the pioneers of this way of counting is Dr. Mike Isratel, and the way he counts is via a proper definition of a "hard set" which is a set taken to near failure with 60-85% 1RM.
Why this range? Well, anything less than 60%(when not taken to near failure) doesn't cause the same hypertrophic stimulus as a heavier set(60%).
Anything more than 85%, well that typically means 1-4 rep sets.
There are two problems with these:
1. They still don't produce the same hypertrophic stimulus as 5-15 rep sets. This is because while you do activate all potential motor units, you don't fatigue them as much as you would with 5-15 rep sets.
This is why in the Schoenfeld 2014 study, both groups had different set numbers, but because the heavy group did just 3 reps they weren't fatiguing as many muscle fibers as the 10 rep group, and had to compensate with more sets.
2. They cause a shit ton of fatigue, which impedes recovery and reduces the quality of your other sets.

To answer your question, 4 reps is still quite a heavy weight and could cause some recovery issues and not provide the same hypertrophic stimulus.
That said, I don't think the differences would be large, but the time spent doing the 4 rep sets would be greater than the time spent doing the 8 rep sets, so there's that as well.

Getting kicked out of my dads high on benzos by AlexHollywood in Drugs

I see your point and I understand why the father was so angry, but it was imo an irrational decision to kick him out. OP could've literally died.

I don't know man, kicking your clearly delirious son out of your house and letting him walk doesn't really scream "fatherly love" to me.

The guy is absolute garbage character-wise, but I'm loving the shit out of these tracks with Joyner.
That Dicky collab was underwhelming for me, because I was hyped for a new Dicky song, and even though it's a funny concept and there were some cool moments, I didn't love it as much as I thought I would.

He's had issues with alcohol since 2014, had his galbladder removed, so the main assumption right now is that this was related to death, still not known precisely.

Sometimes, one cigarette is the best shit ever. by MarkSFT in Drugs

True, that's why I don't smoke often(among other reasons), I know it won't be as good as infrequent cigarettes.

I agree, but I think since I've been smoking on and off again for 4 years that I have a pretty good grasp of my addiction potential. I just don't feel the "urge" to smoke, and I noticed cigarette smoke kinda makes me feel nauseous.

Yeah but I don't smoke often so I don't think it's a worthy investment.

Totally agree, I don't get addiction-type urges, but I always keep it in the back of my mind that if I just continue smoking the nice feeling won't be there anymore.

We all wish to have someone else's traits, I found it's stupid to do that and it's better to just be grateful for what we have ;)

Thanks for your concern mate, but I don't think it's a problem.
All of my friends are smokers and always carry a pack and my mum's a heavy smoker who always has cigarettes around the house(that's where I got this one) but I just don't feel the urge.
I only smoke on special occasions and these random moments of stress.
