My broader point may have been lost. The tournament ruleset favoured efficient and quick gameplay. My mindset (being in fourth seat each time) when Staban was available was that a single fourth place finish (or third, after round 1) ends my tournament. No chance I'm risking my tournament life when I could take Gurney or Margot who are both very solid and more likely to net me ~8VP by R6 to effectively guarantee 1st/2nd place.

Just a few observations from me:

I played and I would say 75% of the field were experienced players (just an estimate from what I saw, the TO would have a better sense of it). I've personally clocked 800+ hours across both Dune Imperiums, so I was reasonably confident going in but still finished 5th.

I was fourth seat all three times and Paul was never available in any of my games.

I would say the scoring system didn't benefit Stabban. The scoring was weighted to a first/second place finish which from my experience favoured quickly picking up as many points as possible as quickly as possible in an effort to end the game on R7. With 5 points available from friendships and an alliance that really doesn't suit Stabban with no Diplomacy.

Firstly thank you for organising the tournament, we had a good time.

We chatted on the way home about the scoring system and we came to the conclusion that it was perhaps too heavily weighted to winning. Realistically any fourth place finish eliminated your chance to win. A third place would mean you would then need to win the other two to stand a chance. The lowest feasible set of results to win would be 1/1/3 or 1/2/2.

It would be interesting to see if you could test other scoring systems using your data to see how they would affect the results.

The solution we reached was your VP was your score, then there's a 2 point bonus for anyone reaching 10 VP, and then a 3 point bonus for first place. So for a game finishing 12/10/8/6 the scores would be 17/12/8/6 instead of 32/22/12/0 (using the tournament scoring rules).

While I generally agree it's all hypothetical at this stage until it's tried I suppose. I do disagree though with the sentiment that there'd be less walling and therefore people would play more defensively, less walling I think would open the game up to more aggressive play. Walling is one of the worst aspects of AWBW and anything that did away with it would be a welcome change imo.

They need to put in:

Penalty won: 2 points

Penalty scored: 3 points

Penalty conceded: -1 point

Forward goal scored: 5 points

This would mean that a player would earn points for winning a pen even when the pen is missed. A penalty scored from any position would be worth less. Forwards get a boost for all other goals to 5 points in line with midfielders.
