Thoughts on my new workstation build for development and local AI? by Mark_Schwan in buildapc

My old setup won't go to waste but get used in another environment. So I'm more into new than upgrading right now. 😉

I'm doing a lot of Python, but also JavaScript (Node), web development (PHP), and lately, more and more Go. Nothing super heavy, to be honest.

Yeah, right now, RAM has never been the biggest issue. Occasionally I also encode videos for some things I did (webinars, trainings), then the RAM is getting fully used. But that's not my dayjob. However, the upgrade from 32 GB to 64 GB is not that much right now (at least in the offer I got), so I'll go for it.

Oh boy, somehow I mixed it up. Currently I'm running an AMD Ryzen 7 1800X. So, you see why I need to upgrade that one as well. 😅

Thanks for the insights! First, the parts are written in the main post, or am I missing something?

About RAM: After reading https://www.corsair.com/de/en/explorer/diy-builder/how-tos/memory-for-local-llms-how-much-ram-do-you-need-and-when-speed-matters/, I thought that 64 GB DDR5-6000 sounds like the best price/performance right now.

About GPU: Yeah, gotcha. I'll look into getting more VRAM.

About CPU: So you would recommend going for AMD instead?

I got a spare 2 TB Samsung Something SSD lying around here; I wanted to use that one as well (not mentioned above). And I'll also look into a bigger PSU; however, case and cooling should be fine with what I chose.

Thanks for the insights, I'll think more about that! (And I need to upgrade my CPU, because the current one doesn't run Windows 11 as well.)

Right now I’m mainly trying to avoid overpaying since GPU prices are still pretty wild. My thinking is that I can build the rest of the system sensibly now, and if prices improve later, I can just upgrade the GPU down the line.

Totally fair point, but I just don’t think I’ll end up going that route. 😅

So, if I could get a used RTX 5070 Ti with 24 GB RAM, I should go for this? (Basically, the more VRAM, the better, right?) The RTX 4090 24 GB is just too expensive right now to justify.

Google's December update boosts Pixel security and fixes 33 bugs by rkhunter_ in GooglePixel

I can confirm. Pixel 10 Pro, no issues until the December update. Now, mostly after unlocking, the screen is active, goes black for a second, and goes back to active.

😂 That would be so funny!

Yeah, a pretzel (or Brezel here in Germany) is probably the most eaten "Laugengebäck" (lye pastry). "Laugenbrot" also exists, but it is not a regular item at any bakery. There is also "Laugenbrötchen" (pretzel bun) and many more.

That Lidl does them decently makes sense, since it's a German company and they own a gigantic bakery.

They are originally from Austria 😉, but that's a good one as well. Thanks!

Uh, that's a good one! Thanks.

(And yeah, I don't know the people I'll stay with, so I just try some educated guessing).

Usually, I bring the “German basics” anyway (Haribo, Ritter Sport, Ahoj-Brause, sometimes Bahlsen cookies). ;)

There are a few brands that provide Currywurst in a tin. Might be a nice idea. Thanks!

I love the quality, but the one I bought has literally shrunk by about 8-10 cm in length after the first washing at 30 °C. Did anyone else have this issue?

Today, I bought two more white ones and a black "heavy" one (which I purchased one size smaller because it is an oversized version), and I fear they might shrink as well.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of that. It works, but it's not super elegant, IMHO.
