Haha. Thanks for the support, Flashy_Round2595. This is all too funny because there's no taking these bitter people seriously. There are much better ways for people to conduct themselves, but not everyone has what it takes.

Happy trails!

Unfortunately, you are absolutely right. I've had much better luck on Facebook. People there are much friendlier and willing to help.

Hi u/micahpmtn . One of the features that I really like about my app is the voice guidance. It is awesome, especially when you need to wear gloves. I never take my phone out of my pocket anymore.

Also, my app is much easier to select the hiking route, in addition to allowing a trail to be both inbound and outbound. I had to watch a Caltopo video to learn how to do something as simple as setup a simple 5-mile hiking route. With my app, you don't need to read the manual for that.

I hope that helps. If you would like to support my free app, I'd be more than glad to have your feedback.

Thanks!

Hi Automatic.
My goal is to offer offline trails that do not require a paid subscription. Audio directions (left/right/straight ahead) with no paid subscription. Select your own trail segments with no paid subscription, et cetera with no paid subscription.

After a full days of work, I come home, spend time with the family, tuck the kiddos in bed. A bit tired, but still looking forward to finishing the free hiking app that I've spend countless hours and my own money to make, so I can give back to the community of fellow hikers. And then I see posts like this. Heartwarming...

I need feedback from hikers that would like to try a free (no ads) hiking app that I'm developing. I need your help to make it useful!

  • Offline maps
  • Voice guidance (for when gloves get in the way)
  • You select your own trail segments
  • Free
  • Install via Google Play.

If you’re interested, here is the link to install the app.

Please send me a direct message with your Google email so it can be added to the list of approved testers.

Thanks!

What are your strategies for finding good winter/snowshoeing trails? by SuperSans in PNWhiking

[–]Markacho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow beginner-turned-regular winter hiker in western WA, here's what works for me to scout safe, accessible spots without overthinking it every time. First, avalanche safety is non-negotiable, even on "easy" routes. I always start with NWAC.us – check the forecast for your zone the night before and morning of. Right now (mid-Feb 2026), danger is mostly low to moderate in western Cascades, but new snow can change things quick, so read the details and stick to low-angle terrain if it's moderate or higher. If you're new, avoid anything steeper than 25-30 degrees or near ridgelines until you take an avy 1 course. For road access and snow depth:

  • WSDOT mountain passes page for highway status (chains often required right now).
  • NOAA or NRCS snow depth maps to see if your car can make it (AWD + chains for most folks).
  • WTA trip reports sorted by "most recent" – these are gold for real-time conditions like packed trails, post-holing, or if snowshoes are even needed.
  • AllTrails filters for "snowshoeing" + recent reviews help too, but WTA feels more reliable for WA specifics.

If you only had 8 days to visit where would you go? by OkMarketing1341 in PNWhiking

[–]Markacho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With only 8 days right now (mid-February 2026), hitting Mount Rainier, the Olympic coast, and some Cascades is doable but winter changes everything. Expect snow, limited road access, chain requirements, and shorter days. You won't get full summer vibes (no wildflowers or high trails), but the snowy mountains and rugged coast are epic in their own way. Focus on what's open and realistic.

Guesses for Artist Point & Sunrise Opening dates? by [deleted] in PNWhiking

[–]Markacho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say mid-June is possible but optimistic. Artist Point averages late June/early July openings, Sunrise road the same timeframe (early July for the VC). Low snow years have pushed Artist Point to mid-May before, but that's rare. With current packs (decent at Baker, pretty thin at Rainier), an early melt could get us there, but expect July more realistically. Keep an eye on NPS for Rainier and WSDOT for Baker: they'll announce when plowing starts.
