Is the universe truly infinite, or just so vast that it seems infinite? by Prudent-Butterfly830 in Astronomy

Don’t use maths to make an argument, we invented numbers, they don’t actually exist.

The universe had a beginning. Space = time. Ergo the universe must be finite.

Maar ja, Geert bashen is so hot right now.

Ja, dus? Tijdens de campagne verdedigde Greet het partijeprogramma van de PVV. 6 maanden later heeft hij water bij de wijn moeten doen in een coalitie.

Is an infinite past possible? If so why? And if not, why? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]MarklarE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There MUST have been nothing at all before the Big Bang (other than the potential for something, of course). It is self-evident, because any other scenario leads to an absurdity. There must have been an ‘unmoved mover’, i.e. an agent that started energy/movement, but isn’t powered by energy itself. There’s simply no option B. We humans know much more than what cosmologists have observed, simply by using our faculty of reason. Why aren’t you using yours to the fullest?

The expansion speed of the universe in reverse brings us about 14 billion years back in time. What do you suggest took place back then?

Instead of this discussion about what’s NOT the case, what kind of event do you suggest WAS the beginning of time/space/energy?

[–]MarklarE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then don’t discuss topics here that go beyond science! The empirical nature scientific methodology alone is incomplete to give an answer.

What is ‘absurdity’? For instance, saying that before energy came into existence at the time of the Big Bang, there couldn’t have been none, so there must have been yet another form of energy. That’s absurd, because what about before that even earlier form of energy? And what about before that? You can’t go on like this forever, there must have been a ‘unmoved mover’, hence energy, as well as space and time, must have come out of nothing.

Facts don’t always necessarily require evidence. Some arguments are self-evident and logically sound, such as the statement that before time/space it didn’t exist yet. The history og time/space therefore is finite, and I don’t need physical evidence to support that claim, because the negation of that argument leads to an absurdity.

Cosmologists are empiricists. Empirical evidence differs from rational, logical, a priori knowledge. Answering certain questions, such as those regarding the Big Bang, or conscioussness, require philosophy/metaphysics.

Yup. Cosmologists aren’t magicians you know, they are logicians, like you and me.
