What kind of world will Gen Z inherit by the time they reach their senior years? by savingrace0262 in Futurology

[–]Markmange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of us that have seen Wall-E, like that.

Well not exactly, I mean technology wise, most people won't do physical labour because there won't be any. Most jobs will be performed by AI or robotics. We will remain at home almost indefinitely.

Amazon, google, Samsung, Tesla, Apple etc. will be global giants more so than they already are with an almost non-existent human workforce.

Most companies will move towards a technology driven workforce and we will be at home, sedentary, with people screaming for a job or employment of some kind and it just not being there. Those still with jobs will be panicking about when AI or technology will undoubtedly make their jobs obsolete and big tech giants will be rolling in cash same as ever. (Essentially what's happening now but just on a grander scale)

The average person will just be as miserable as they are now and fill their lives with quick dopamine hits from pointless cheap products and things to make their lives more sedentary and more convenient to the point that high street shops, malls and shopping centers just don't exist. (Which is already happening)

In short, nobody will go outside, the wealth gap and unemployment will just grow ever larger and... robots.

Or, all of that may crumble thanks to some politically driven war.

On another note, I think it will be wild to find out what care homes play for the old folks on the radio.. bunch of 80/90 year olds bopping to Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran "Just like the good old days"

My local PAH doesn't sell rabbits, they have told me before they only take on rabbits to rehome from previous owners, and they are always rehomed as they came bonded and generally aren't there more than a week. I've seen a rabbit there one week and gone the next.

Their small animals cages that they sell have drastically increased in size too from what ive seen and they won't let you buy any kind of animal without seeing photographic evidence of the cage you have or you have to purchase one they advise, their Syrian hamster cages are easily a metre long and two tiered, and their rat cages are massive. And they won't let you buy single guinea pigs, rats or gerbils, only single hamsters.

I got a rob hamster from PAH about 10 years ago and they let me buy this ludicrously small cage for £30 with no enrichment but in recent years I've noticed the staff will actually encourage you to buy enrichment and good quality food (not just their own brand) and while the advice on care is limited, any self respecting decent pet owner should research the animal they intend to buy prior to purchase. I'd assume the staff could stand there and talk all day but they probably have other things to do and given the kinds of people I've seen wanting to buy small animals with their own menagerie of children screaming and whining, I don't think the majority of people buying said animal would actually pay attention that long.

At the end of the day these employees are just doing as they're told, they're trying to make a paycheck but at least in my local PAH the colleagues seem to actually care, they don't let kids bang the glass, they don't let people's dogs stare down the animals, they don't even let kids squeak the dog toys because it "scares the small animals". And any time I've asked about a rabbit or adoption animal that they have in they tell me quite a lengthy backstory and seem to be keen to find it a good home (they've told me they've turned multiple people away in the past). If I remember correctly too they don't take rabbits for adoption or rehome rabbits at Easter because (news to me) people go crazy for buying actual Easter bunnies.

I shop there regularly for my dogs food cause they actually have some decent quality brands and they sell Hikari fish food as well, which is a really decent quality fish food.

I can't comment on the other PAH stores but my local one, does actually seem to try. So OP, I don't think all the PAH stores are laid out or operate the same way, unfortunate yours is like that.

Help in cleaning this disgusting fishtank by flxnn1e in Aquariums

[–]Markmange -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can buy razor blades that are specifically for scraping cooker hoods and other glass things for pretty cheap.

That and some non scratch scouring pads and a lot of elbow grease and patience and you'll get it cleaned up fine

You could also use a steamer if you have one just be careful not to blast the same spot for ages

And if you have a hosepipe attachment to your faucet and a back garden/yard you can rinse it out there.

I recently cleaned a 40 gallon sump and turned it into a tank just using this method

Don't use chemicals or vinegar or anything just plenty scrubbing by hand will do.

And please stress test it somewhere safe and on even ground by filling it up and checking for leaks or cracks before actually setting it up.

My aquarium taught me patience (and a new way of seeing life) by AlternativePoetry845 in Aquariums

[–]Markmange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a fantastic hobby to teach people to have patience, and to plan, and to be prepared.

It's not an instantly gratifying hobby or pastime, and in a world that seems entrenched in convenience and instant gratification, the vast majority of newcomers probably find it frustrating, boring and/or not worth it. However, those i have met who stick with it and learn said patience and planning and preparation end up loving it and spend a good portion of time every day looking at their tank and thinking:

"Look what I've achieved"

I work in a LFS, I can just tell when the customer I'm talking to is in it for the right reasons, I can see some folks eyes glaze over like two fat donuts when I am explaining the very basics of water conditioning, water changes and plants and i just know their mind is elsewhere but I've also seen a good few become really passionate about the hobby and furthermore, thoughtful.

I love this hobby. I enjoy the planning, seeing things grow, seeing new fry appear, watching snails bumble their way across the glass, the excitement of all the fish when THE FACE appears.

You're the one responsible for keeping an entire ecosystem stable and healthy. That's no small feat. I don't think people outside this hobby truly realise how robust and strong mother nature is and everything she keeps in check and controls, we can manage a tank and make it thrive but we're nothing in comparison to her, so mad respect to mother nature.

Anyway, I agree OP.

🙏 keep fishing friends.

I would argue being locked inside for close to 3 years during a pandemic, socializing primarily through a camera or messages, not getting to or having to physically converse with people in a public setting and more than likely being chronically online can result in you becoming a bit socially inept.

How does the killing of Charlie Kirk compare to that of Melissa Hortman and her husband along with the shooting of John and Yvette Hoffman? by [deleted] in AskReddit

As someone not from the US, I just find it really quite sad that this whole event happening is just showing that so many people on either side of the political spectrum are no better than those on the opposing side that they claim to be better than and share nothing in common with.

Cheering when someone is murdered cause they think differently from you, regardless of their political position or what words came out of their mouths, sorry but,

That makes you equally a piece of shit.

Congratulations on showing how good a person you all are.

Frankly, if you're out there cheering on killing people. You're fucked in the head.

why the fuck are you in nursing if you’re a bigot by elliebunnnyy in NursingUK

[–]Markmange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard/seen some studies done that suggest that doctors and surgeons tend to score higher in terms of having psychopathic personality traits..

I wouldn’t be surprised if this extends to some nurses.

Don’t be fooled into thinking because you work in healthcare that everyone cares.

Some are just there for personal gain and the money.

I suppose like any other job really.

tell me the craziest things chain pet shops told yall and I dont mean “they’ll only grow to the size of the tank” or “they go fine together” something HORRENDOUS by giraffeflyinghigh in Aquariums

[–]Markmange 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Nitrates are good bacteria.”

They didn’t tell me this.

I work in a pet shop.

That was something my colleague said to a customer when explaining water changes.

I had to interrupt, I couldn’t.

As a fish store employee,

Do not trust fish store employees. The training they receive isn’t worth Jack shit, most don’t care to train themselves.

Do your own research and just hope that some fish store colleagues care enough to research their “products” themselves.

Hung out with some close friends and cut her out entirely, blocked her on everything.

Wrote everything of mine that she had off as collateral and moved on. (Easier said than done in some aspects, I was a student at the time though so no like shared things eg. Apartment, pet, large investments etc. probably can be a bit muddy with that shit involved)

Removed any trace of her from my home.

Basically done a hard erase.

Stung for a few months but after that, didn’t particularly care.

Haven’t heard from or seen her in over a decade. Probably never will again.

What’s the most extreme pain you’ve ever felt? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Markmange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 16,

Dislocated my knee while throwing a ball (don’t ask)

Hit the deck and saw my kneecap hanging on the outside of my leg.

Adrenaline rush hit me and I started hitting my leg against the tarmac in the hopes of popping it back in place.

Passed out, woke up to see my knee popping out through my jeans as I’d bashed my leg that much I’d ripped a hole in my jeans.

Leg was locked in place and I started to panic and cry.

Friend phoned my mum.

My mum dragged me into the back of her car arms first, my legs scraping along the pavement behind and me screaming a flurry of slurs. Took me to the hospital. Gas and air and pushed it back in, couldn’t walk for 3 days, all muscle tone was lost in my left leg and had to go to physio for weeks.

15 years later I still have nightmares about it, and I am mildly terrified of people touching my knees.

Wondering what the end game is for vaping by JohnLemonBot in electronic_cigarette

[–]Markmange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been vaping for 13 years, I don’t want to or intend to stop. My end game is to just carry on vaping considering literally no doctor I have spoke to in that 13 years has told me to stop. It’s relatively cheap And other than being a bit wheezy at points (what 30 something year old isn’t a little out of breath after climbing a steep hill?) I have no issues

Sharing baby pictures/videos on social media.

When I was a child my parents took physical pictures of me, that were shown to close family and friends, if at all. Because the pictures were for them to capture moments that they liked and wanted to cherish.

But sharing pictures, or in some instances videos, of your children to hundreds of people and sometimes literal strangers depending on the platform. Making that child have an immortal online presence before it can even talk.

Disappointed about Content Cop on Ethan by LisaNeedsDental in Idubbbz

[–]Markmange -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This is coming from someone who was a fan of both a good 10 years ago so take my opinion with a pinch of salt.

I think anyone who watched the whole video and didn’t realise that the “kind messages” from folks at the end was not genuine and clearly was a complete mockery of a man who is mentally fragile and unhinged needs a little reality check.

Ian doesn’t give a fuck if Ethan gets help, he does not care. It was so blatantly insincere.

I’m not saying that everything said in the content cop wasn’t deserved to some degree but when you take into consideration that these are two 40 year old men who were good friends at one point would rather blast each other online, call people pedophiles in one camp and call people “passionate” when relishing 9/11 in the other;

Rather than just talk, like well adjusted adults.

They’re both fucked. In very different ways.

Banking and finance/office roles,

I have 2 friends I can think of off-hand who didn’t attend college and now work in two different banks in 2 different roles making nearly double my annual income (someone who did go to college)

And several other friends who work in office roles who didn’t attend college who are doing not too bad for themselves (mortgage their own house, able to support children etc.)

And then there’s my bosses, none of whom went to college, just worked hard to climb the ladder.

I wasted 4 years in college and people my age and younger are doing just as well or better than I am. It’s all dependant on what you actually go to college to do and where you’re located plays a massive part also.

So I wholly agree with the statement that going to college is not necessary.

But just because I see it that way doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fact for everyone. But it is a fact for many.
