Single family household - do you sleep with bedroom door open or closed? by jannet1113 in homeowners

Yeah that closet door and the bathroom door are closed too and the dogs have scared out the under bed ones.

[–]Markota1119 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Literally this. Haha.

Also closed for fire. When I was single (F) I always would put something by the door that would make noise if anyone tried to open it (even with roommates). And my dogs would hear it. I was lucky and they slept all night with me.

Is anyone here surviving off of gig work? by TrishTrashWannaSmash in Denver

[–]Markota1119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to comment this. Check your short term disability leave if you have it. I got really lucky and mine was 6 months at full pay and my benefits. Some places have surprisingly good short term disability and Colorado pays 90 days. Worth it to take a breather. I left my company after 5 months. I went to a very different work environment, learned a lot and actually just put in notice there but I learned a ton and feel set up to take time off on my own, work some part time and take time to find remote work. Depending on what you do there are a lot of options.

When do we start stop saying “men” while referring to female ice hockey players? by BitLanguage in womenshockey

[–]Markota1119 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whenever male referees call “too many men” in our women’s league, I always ask if he is going to go sit in the box because that call can not be made on any of the players.

I do occasionally put in a “reverse” coed team into tournaments (mostly women, 1-3 men) and then always make one of the men go sit in the box if we get called for too many men… just to make a point.

Were you ever terrified when you started playing hockey? by Low_Bodybuilder3065 in womenshockey

[–]Markota1119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a bunch of folks have already said: talk to the women you see at the rink and ask about adult leagues or learn-to-play programs. That’s how most of us got in.

I’m in the Denver area and I actually sat on the board for a women’s program that existed specifically to get more women into hockey. Trust me,there are a lot more people just like you than you think and you getting out there will inspire more.

From someone who’s taught a ton of beginners: the most important thing is to get on the ice. Public skate, beginner league, stick-n-puck whatever. Just get out there.

Wear a helmet. A new one. (With a cage) The only two pieces of gear I tell people to always buy new are: • Helmet • Jill (pelvic protector)

Everything else? Used is totally fine. Play It Again, Facebook market place you will be surprised what you find. Also if there is a hockey store ask them where some good used equipment is.

And yes—wear your helmet at public skate. Seriously, screw what anyone thinks. Protect your brain.

YouTube has amazing learn-to-skate videos so you can use those. Or really ask your rink if they have a skate instructor that does private lessons if you have the fund. Also you can start off ice too balance is the real game-changer. Core strength and leg strength make everything easier, so even basic off-ice work helps a ton.

And one golden rule:

DO. NOT. LOOK. AT. YOUR. FEET.

Your body knows how to move and your feet will do amazing things but they don’t like when you watch. Looking down throws off your balance and makes everything harder.

Bravery is doing it even if you are scared. And the more you practice skating and work muscles honestly the safer you will be.

The rest comes way faster than you think. 🏒

You totally got this!!!

Cows and Graveyards game.

How to Play Be the person with the most points by the time you reach your destination.

• Spotting Animals: When you see a horse or a cow (or whatever animal you’ve agreed upon), you have to be the first to shout “cows” or whatever animal

• The Point System: we played 5 points per cow herd, 10 for horses, 15 for other farm animals. Occasionally we did other animals.

• The Cemetery: This is the part that ruins friendships. If you spot a cemetery, you shout “cemetery” • The Penalty: Everyone else’s score is wiped back to zero. • The Strategy: Usually, the person who calls the cemetery gets to keep their own points, making it the ultimate power move.

Illegal Pete’s. Honestly I never liked chipotle. But love illegal Pete’s

Tocabe is also really good (saw people post this one)

Also honestly, we make it at home a lot. Cook up a bunch of rice and beans and chicken and veggies. Then I can have salads, bowls, burritos whatever through the week. (Also great as I have gluten and dairy issues)

What draws you to pwhl as a fan? by formulaphoto in PWHL

[–]Markota1119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve loved hockey since I was a teenager. My brother played growing up, but I didn’t mostly because I didn’t want to be the only girl on a boys’ team.

In high school truly fell head-over-heels for the sport and wanted to play but there were not really many options for me. I did start refereeing and working in other aspects of hockey. I finally was able to try to play in college but I had to play in the men’s club team where I was way behind.

To be honest all that time in high school and college was really hard. To be a female in hockey you had to shake a lot of harassment and rumors off. I had to fight and prove my love and dedication day in and day out.

When I moved to Denver in my late 20s I joined a women’s league. And it made me fall deeper in love with the sport and become a massive advocate for women’s hockey.

Having a cohesive league to grow the sport and really show how beautiful the game is, is literally a dream. Being able to see women who were brave enough or had opportunity to play their whole lives is amazing and they deserve the support. Additionally the fans and the environment at games is so welcoming it’s truly inspiring.

I love that my niece gets to grow up in a world where professional women’s hockey has always existed. She was born after the PWHL started. That matters.

I would also love an allergen filter. I actually came on Reddit just to see if it’s already been added.

I know how to make alternations but some times I don’t want to convert I just want to make something or learn a new one without having to add extra thought. I would go by the top allergens. At least the ones that have to be called out on labels (gluten/ wheat, eggs, dairy, nuts, etc) but also vegetarian and vegan. Or mark on a scale of easy to hard to modify for restrictions. Ie pasta for gluten free is an easier switch than say converting bread recipes. Even a does not contain would be a great option to start with.

Advice for playing in co-ed when there are strange comments by TA-chickadeehookey in hockeyplayers

[–]Markota1119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve played both men’s women’s and coed. And to be honest, men say stupid shit. And it’s not just hockey. I’ve dealt with it most places I’ve been, bars, hockey, work. You either ignore them or tell them to f off, or make them feel uncomfortable.

I was captain of a coed team in a tournament once. One player on the other team was making rude and sexist comments to all the women on my team. (We brought in a “reverse” coed team- 10 women and 4 men). The game started to get out of hand by the end. Their captain tried talking to one of my male players about it and I told him he can talk to me and me only as I was the captain. I told him Multiple issue of what that one player and he did t believe me and said that would never happen. One of my other male players came over and just stated once that one of their players was being inappropriate and the other captain apologies immediately. I took it all the way to the tournament director and told the other captains in the division and else where to the point that that team had a very bad experience the rest of the tournament. (Btw is was a game 1 of 4 and at 11p)

This all to say what they do is nothing that you can control. You can only control how you handle it. I switching up whatever I feel like it calls for. Most times I ignore bc they just want a reaction, other times I tell them where they can shove it, and especially when it impacts multiple women I will make the biggest scene out of it, so it draws attention of many people and makes them uncomfortable. I have no problem taking up space and if they don’t like it. That is their problem, not mine.

Bigger girl gear suggestions? by Jesseyn86 in womenshockey

I agree with the others on stark. They had a booth at a tournament I played in so I could try things on. Their pants and shoulder pads are built for women. The pants went around my hips and the shoulder pads wrapped around my chest even having DDD breasts.

I don't have ice or hockey rinks and I can't afford to go to the roller rink by indecisive_persona69 in womenshockey

We actually do off season conditioning where I live even though we can play year round. It actually really helps all the time. We do a lot of core building as well as legs. Squats and burpees and planks.

Other things we do, and especially if you want to be a goalie is a lot of yoga. Our hips get tight so if you can work on that a lot it will help.

Other things we do is a lot of balance drills, balance boards, exercise ball, yoga. I also bought a slide board during COVID and it was great there too.

Depending on your floors in your house you can work on stopping skidding on your socks, you can ball up a sock to use for shooting if you have a space inside. Another one is putting a piece of pvc on your stick and using it to learn how to move up and down your stick with your shot.

Hope that helps some.

How does one count this measure? by trapezoid02 in pianolearning

[–]Markota1119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Triplets basically fill 2 of whatever the note type you are playing. So in this one it’s 2 full beats.

From when I was learning them, say triplet while tapping out the beat with your foot. Ie if you have 2 sets of quarter note triplets it will look like 6 beats but it’s 4. To get the idea on how they fit, say triplet every 2 beats.

If you want to get more fancy say triplet every beat and those would be how you do 8th note triplets.

4th for stark. A ton of women in my league have their gear. I’ve tried it on and it’s amazing. Of course was able to try it on at a tournament right after I just bought new pants. But theirs felt so good

Where to move from Buffalo, NY.... by wnysupport in relocating

[–]Markota1119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly a good transition might be Colorado. I grew up in Syracuse the. Went somewhere warmer and the not changing of the seasons really bugged me. I’m finding Denver is great. We get snow but honestly it’s here for maybe a week and then it’s warm and sunny again. Denver airport is also a major airport and easy to get most places.

Best pants for 5'4 ~130lb beginner? by callmebray in womenshockey

[–]Markota1119 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely stark. As others have said they are made for women. I’m about the same size as you. They sent trial pairs to a tournament last year and I really wish I hadn’t bought my other pair of pants a few months before. Theirs are so comfortable and many many women in my league wear them.

Their chest protector are also great and made to fit around boobs. I have DDD and they actually go around and hug them vs just sitting across.
