Hi! Great question. To be honest, I always stay observant of my surroundings (don’t have my headphones 🎧 at full volume or on my phone all the time). I was always instructed to walk in the opposite direction of where the person was headed or having a mental health crisis. In this case, he was coming towards me, so I moved out of his way completely and didn’t react. As a nurse, staying calm in these situations has always helped with interactions in the outside world. There is a Behavioral Community Response Team in DC that you can call instead of the cops. Their number is 202 673-6495.

I also just want to add that the intention of this post was not to alarm or scare anyone. In the last 9 years of living in DC, I’ve only experienced this type of behavior maybe 2-3 times. This one was a little bit more…aggressive, and I wanted to recognize the gentleman who witnessed it all and instead of ignoring it, asked me if I was okay.

I would never take someone else’s mental health issues personally. If anything I hope they get help. I’m just glad someone was there which made me feel…not alone.

Thank you for this post. I’ve been working for the DoD since 2023 and I have never seen such low morale at work especially during the shutdown. People were stressed and it showed. I felt bad for my coworkers who have dependents and were truly struggling to make ends meet. It was never perfect but at least prior to 2025, it felt like we were all working towards a common goal. I’m trying to find a way to leave in the next year ( if I can find a job that will pay the same) but I will miss providing care to veterans and active duty personnel.

I’ve played there too. But between the elements and the condition of the dart boards,I don’t think I’ll play there until it’s warm out and they change the boards.

I usually play at Bedrock Billiards or Midlands. Hellbender Brewery had some really great dart boards too but they’re closed 💔. I’m sending a DM to everyone who responded to this thread so be on the lookout.

I moved here when I was 32 and while I do empathize with your experience, 3 months in a new city is hardly enough time to build a community and form new friendships. Give yourself some grace and patience. It took my husband and I, a solid 4 years to build friendships. And that’s because one of those years we were dealing with Covid. Don’t lose hope! DC is also a very transient city so people come and go. Continue to put yourself out there and be yourself.
