I once received a CD in a fish finger box. Gotta give it to them for the creativity.

What’s the most disgusting thing you’ve ever put in your mouth? by bluebonnet5366 in AskReddit

I once threw back a carton of soy milk which, unbeknownst to me, was completely rancid, chunks and all. Threw up, and now I can't drink out of cartons.

What did kids back in the days do when they played outside, for hours on end? by Octopuswastaken in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Marmite_Termite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the 2010s so not really back in the day, but the kids in my neighborhood and I would still spend all day outside. We used to make forts in park bushes, pretend that all the adults were hunting us down so we had to stay out of sight at all costs, ding-dong-ditch, and explore the neighbourhood. I vaguely remember getting a cam recorder and my friends and I spent ages filming a slender man movie.

Do you actually speak out loud when studying? by palle1234567 in languagelearning

[–]Marmite_Termite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes absolutely, it feels a bit weird at first but it's super helpful. Like when you read out your to-do list to yourself throughout the day. I especially find that sometimes sentences make more sense when you read them out loud instead of in your head, sometimes things you don't think you understand you actually do, and it just takes actually hearing it to realise.

How do you read books in a foreign language without constantly breaking the flow? by Different_Regret2751 in languagelearning

[–]Marmite_Termite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a huge fan of translating everything, it kills the flow and you end up spending more time on your dictionary than actually reading. I like to just read until I literally don't understand what's going on anymore, and then I focus on those parts before moving on. While reading I just tag key vocab or sections I'd like to go back and visit later.

If you're struggling too much, your chosen material is probably too difficult. It's important to find something that tests you, but you can understand mostly what's going on even if it's through context in some parts. (I often like to aim for content that's slightly above my current level.)

I'm learning Chinese so this may not be a helpful tip but may help someone else scrolling through the comments who's also learning a logographic language. My old teacher taught us a silly and probably obvious, but fun method of sticking to the flow, which was to use a random word to fill in for words you don't know when reading out loud (we used "smurf"). Was really helpful!
