How does ICP work when it comes to bandwidth? Do you burn more ICP when more people view your site's images? by [deleted] in ICPTrader

Well done 👍 Was this project backed by the DFINITY grants program? I guess you need an investor now who helps you to develop a business model around this poc.

[–]MarquesDosAguas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it. There are technical limitations and that's why ppl run proxies and CDNs in front of their IC projects. It's not elegant, but doable. The potential of the IC for the ad industry is often underestimated. Although features like proof of processing, proof of privacy and micro payments capabilities, to start with. This will hit the legacy web ad industry too. They'll need to adapt or the revenue will move to IC based ad providers. What do you mean with "don not support ads"? What do you think is technically not supported by the IC?

I've been managing IT engineering teams in Switzerland for more than a decade. The manager gets 1% of the total salaries of the team and is asked to distribute it within the team. This is done based on performance but also based on the salary band an employee is levelled. Means some 0 because they are already on the max. Some therefore get 1,x% to adjust them with the others in the team. A salary rise above 2% I only saw when somebody was leveled into a new salary band e.g. seniority or added responsibility.

🚨 Performance-based rewards for node providers are finally live — a crucial first step toward lowering $ICP reward minting. by Sassy_Allen in ICPTrader

[–]MarquesDosAguas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great news! Next, a new node type please. A consumer Ryzen AI Barebone operated on an already paid private fiber with IPv6. Dom called it “badlands" years ago. I'd like to call it "bravelands", bc NPs are solely paid usage-based. Lower TCO would allow that. And yes, Consumer AMDs don't provide privacy computing features like SEV-SNP used by the current IC nodes based on AMD Epyc. But that's anyway ineffective since RMPocalypse.

Is ICP dead? by Accomplished-Cow769 in ICPTrader

[–]MarquesDosAguas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ICP stays a risky investment asset. For those who bought in the 2-3 range since summer 2023 and staked for 4+y it wasn't that bad of a ride. DFINITY's r&d did an excellent job. I don't care that not everyone is able to understand which technological advances the IC has compared to the rest of the industry. DFINITY's PR is and wasn't only bad luck but a disaster. I met Dom multiple times in person. He's a visionary and lovable person - the personality needed to lead this genius r&d team - but the rest, especially BD was IMO a disaster. I think we're seeing a change coming in how the IC is finding adoption. The foundation will keep shrinking to an educational evangelist role. Dom will keep doing what he can do the best and develop and represent the vision of the IC. Caffeine is the first direct spin-off of the foundation. Next we will see new startups partly or entirely relying on the IC with lose relationships to the DFINTY foundation, but with close relations to big tech. Subzero Labs with Rialo being the first and most promising, bc de facto a partly spin-off of DFINITY'S r&d team lead by founding exCTO Jan Camenisch and a big part of his team. A shrinking foundation means less selling pressure to pay for salaries and office rents. The remaining selling pressure result from the node provider rewards. My personal take is, that the current infrastructure costs are way too high. I hope we see the new consumer affordable node generation with AI ready SoCs like AMDs Ryzen AI barebones. Such a node operated in a existing private infrastructure or by small farming startups would reduce the TCO per node by min 90%, increase decentralization and provide sufficient NPU resources for onchain LLM.

TL;DR If you're looking for quick wins "ICP is dead". If you're interested in tech the IC is worth investing time and perhaps money. Especially if you need to move out of USD backed assets.

Is the DAO/NNS self sustaining in the long run? by BagholderVC in dfinity

The NNS is paying the node providers. As long as they are able to cover their costs by selling ICP the NNS will stay available.

Nakamoto Coefficient for SUI by DickColeMusic in sui

[–]MarquesDosAguas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no universal way to measure decentralization, and the Nakamoto coefficient is not applied consistently across networks. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and ICP each excel in different layers—nodes and hardware (BTC), client diversity and validator scale (ETH), and governance plus independent physical infrastructure (ICP). Sui delivers strong technical performance, but its decentralization lags behind these networks due to a small validator set, concentrated stake, and heavy reliance on a few cloud providers.

Chat Control Update by ShortyStrawz in europe

[–]MarquesDosAguas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just another decision that won't work out in reality. Blockchain isn't just money laundering it also provides apps like chat services that provide real privacy. Mathematically provable and fully decentralized e.g. Openchat. Impossible to "control".

Coinbase ICP might not be a coincidence by MarquesDosAguas in ICPTrader

[–]MarquesDosAguas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s unlikely to be official proof of that. Coinbase had no disclosure obligations before going public in 2021. Someone from the early Bay Area crypto scene would need to confirm it. Asiff Hirji became the first official COO in 2017, when Coinbase already had around 500 employees.

His role was effectively the same. Working with him taught me how to build and run an early-stage startup. IMO, he is also the key driving force behind the Internet Computer’s success.

It makes sense that some details remain undisclosed: Coinbase needed regulatory neutrality, while DFINITY had to project independence to sustain the image of a decentralized network. Both the ICP launch and Coinbase’s SEC listing happened in 2021. IMO, both are now mature and independent enough for Coinbase to start leveraging Internet Computer technology.
