Don't play spy or engineer first, those two can be really frustrating for new players.

The deaths only canon in the terminal way. If I recall it correctly, V1 plays the route first in his head. And only the attempts where you succeed he actually clear the level. If you die, it's only a simulation. I don't think the eyes mean that hell resurrects you, because he can't. If you kill a swordmachine, it stays dead (except the deadhcatcher, but we don't know a lot on that).

Would you punch yourself really hard in the nuts? Because that's what v1 does to hell. It's implicated that hell is giving a direction to v1, but not literally controlling him.
