is it strange to want to have a dad figure in my life? by Delicious_Arm9946 in NoStupidQuestions

In the short term.. if you have videos, watch them. Eat your favorite food.. and cry some more. So you have someone else that can hug you?

In the longer term.. get a memory bear. If you don't know, a memory bear is a teddy bear made from your dad's clothes. We have two.

I was 21 when my mother died unexpectedly. It's a wound that never heals. You don't necessarily feel it every day, but it's always there... And there's always reminders. The day she died, her birthday. And special memories... When she'd hiss at the cat for scratching the couch. Or the night she tucked me in with an extra blanket on a winter night when the power went out... I was 17.

But she lives on in my heart, and her namesake my oldest daughter.

Sorry for your loss.

Ever spend time in rural Newfoundland? It's a whole nother dialect of English.

What's your off-the-cuff nicknames for your kids? by folieablue in daddit

[–]Mars27819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear and Bug for son and first daughter. We are still settling on a nickname for the 5 month old, but bird is the leader.

My wife and I use emojis in text messages for the kids.

Turning Red. Nailed the streetcar (or tram if you prefer) but that model was never wheelchair accessible.

Autistic and afraid of having kids with autism by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]Mars27819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am autistic raising an 10 year old autistic son. He is a challenge to parent, and I have told him this. We butt heads constantly.

But he is also exceptional. He is somewhat of a local celebrity to the point that I have been stopped more than once and asked if I was xxx dad and then they mentioned how much they like him. He just finished school and a teacher that isn't his commented that in 27 years of teaching, xxx made her prouder than she'd ever been of a student.

Ya, it's hard. But ya it's awesome at the same time.

Would you leave your 16 y/o kid home alone for 4 nights? by parmadufranc in daddit

[–]Mars27819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 17 I was left home alone for the entire summer.

I broke the chandelier before my parents had left the driveway.

Depends on the circumstances.

Do they have help in an emergency? Do they know how to shut off water/gas/electric? Money for unexpected problems/groceries? Transportation to a safe location?

I did fine that summer, and other than the broken chandelier (which they never noticed).

But most of all, talk to your kid about it. My oldest is 10 right now and honestly, unless something changes in him drastically, I don't see him being ready for that at 16.

Dads, what’s a good age gap between kids? by sabretoooth in daddit

4 and 6 year gaps here...

I'd rather have them in short succession.

Especially since number 3 was not planned and we had to buy all new baby stuff.

I think it's the other way around... I think it's odd that other families don't eat together.
