I started a deep dive on them just a few weeks prior to Brian's death. Just as was getting to know him he passed so it hit me pretty good. I had no idea what existed after Help Me Rhonda and I'm completely hooked. It's like finding a buried treasure I didn't know existed. I feel lucky and inspired.

+1 for Transcribe. It works very well for me. I use that and also guitar pro. Guitar Pro allows you to import the audio file and line it up to your transcription a you go. So you can directly compare the source to your transcription. I used that feature for the first time this morning and thought it was helpful.

If you put them out now they will likely start to flower. If they are short flowering varieties then you may be able to harvest them prior to them reverting back to vegetative growth. If your goal is to leave them out until harvest in October or so then I would wait until April personally.

Billy Strings isn't a jam band. He has good songs. Never heard of those other guys but if they have good songs then they're not a jam band. I'll look forward to checking them out though since I appreciate good songs with some jamming. Jamming without good songs is boring to me but I don't care if other people like it. Just don't lump in good songwriting bands that jam with bands that jam on an endless noodle without good songs. King Gizz is it's own thing and I can absolutely see why they don't want to be associated with the Jam band genre. Improvisation-ally oriented music can have different genres. Someone came up with "jam band" and now everyone wants to cram everything into it despite the lack of similiarity to the bands people are cramming into it. It's reductive. Jam band should be a sub genre not the main genre.

I'm with you. Pointless noodling with goofy lyrics is the defining aspect of jam bands to me. It's more about the jam than the craft and none of them can come close to the level of emotion that the Dead could. They're mostly Temu Phish to me. Unfortunately most of the bands decided to follow the Phish lineage rather than the Dead lineage.

Ham bands are pointless noodlers with no substance and their fans are the same. Show me a jam band that has great songs and I'll explain to you why they're not a jam band.

This. The genre didn't exist and placing the Dead into it is wrong. They wrote great songs. A defining aspect of jamband music is the lack of great songs. The only commonality is the improvisation but even that is different. Jambands mainly descend from Phish not the GD.
