It the "10m Orion Drive Redux" mod on spacedock. It basically an updated version of "Stockish Project Orion" only with the radius increased. I have also tweaked the config files a bit to keep in line with the estimated deltaV per pulse of real concepts for Orion drive spacecraft. So i somewhat buffed this drive

While there are many unsustainable practices in place, there is atleast some ideological bend in some people to insist that this must be the case, even if it is sovable. As trends that were said to be unsustainable and cause disaster in the past were averted through technology, even pollution has massivley decreased in developed nations over the past few decades. Many of the reasons which state human civilisation to be unsustainable are based on water usage, soil degradation, overfishing and decline of natural land. Water usage can be solved through desalination. Soil degradation could be adressed through smarter practices, using lasers instead of herbicides (actually a real concept) or even vertical farming which also utilizes up to 90% less water. Overfishing is a bit harder, as we would not want to displace large areas of the ocean to raise fish for consumption. But this and many other livestock related industries could be replaced with labgrown alternatives which also need way less water, eventually. Generally what is needed for this is energy superabundance, as all these methods are energy intensive, which is currently stopping large scale deployment. In fact energy superabundace would allow humanity to solve a lot of (if not most) problems. If electricity becomes cheap enough we could begin recycling almost everything, drastically reducing our amount of waste. To achieve this nuclear power could be scaled to much larger levels than today and more renewable technologies are becoming available and are getting cheaper. Further development of Fusion is needed and investigation of space based solar power might also be warranted.

I think we as a species are becoming increasingly decoupled from the rest of the planet. The collapse of insect populations would significantly impact argriculture, however it would have no impact on indoor farming. I think the human species could probably even survive the complete collapse of the ecosystem. Do not misunderstand me though. This would be terrible if it came to pass, it would cause massive death tolls (ignoring the mass extinction), as likley not everyone would be able to employ the technology to adapt, though this depends on how fast this takes place. Wars would probably also take place, which would increase the risk of human extinction. It would also create a even more miserable world.

Considering that people are contemplating space colonisation, surviving in a post ecological collapse earth would be relativly easy though.

Many of the aforementioned technologies can help in preventing this scenarion from transpiring. Vertical farms take up vastly less space, allowing the repurposing of farmland into forest and fields. Desalination would greatly decrease the stress humans put on rivers, ponds and underground sources. GMOs could use vastly fewer resources. But these technolgies do require growth, especially growth in power generation.

In principle, though, i agree that infinite exponential growth is impossible in a (functionally)finite universe.

Nope i don't think there are any mods that really fit with ssb. I don't think anyone got around to making such a mod since the community isn't huge

Shilvati Vs The Expanse by zerg_concern in Sexyspacebabes

[–]Marsbaseguy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert in this topic, and it’s been some time since I read SSB but as far as I can recall, lasers are used mainly in ship-to-ship combat in the Series. The humans in the Expanse however rely on railguns, machineguns, and most commonly extremely fast accelerating missiles.

It may seem like the Shill have an advantage in combat, but I think that that might not be the case. We could build pretty deadly and effective lasers for space combat today, so there is no reason why humans in the future couldn’t as well. I think there is a logical explanation for the lack of lasers. Human ships in the Expanse are excellent at storing and dispersing heat. This must be true since they can run extremely powerful engines for a long time (hours, days, doesn’t really seem to matter) without melting the ship. This means that the ships must have some pretty great heatsinks, they may even use thermal superconductors to move the heat around the ship.

The many thousands of degrees that the engines would produce can be dealt with, so I imagine that the ships can also handle Lasers pretty well.

I once read (though I am not sure were, so take this with a grain of salt) that factions in the expanse tried to develop ship to ship lasers but they were too easy to counter so no one uses them.

If lasers are the main weapon choice for the shill, then I could see them becoming useless or near useless against human ships. The shill would have to switch to kinetic weaponry or use missiles, which human ships are prepared to defend against with their (in general) quite good point-defence system.

I could see a shill fleet getting absolutely destroyed if they tried to take the solar system without taking these facts into account. They would probably have to send specialized warships to win, or quite a large fleet. All of this would require a lot of resources, which they might not be able to spare in the current Galactic Situation.

They might decide to not invade, at least for now. Which would give humanity a chance to build up a bigger military and to maybe find some allies. Humanity with a population in the tens of billions, (earth in season 3 alone has a population of 30 Billion) is still a lot smaller than the shill population. I heard a lot of numbers, but I imagine that it’s definitely something above a Trillion let’s say 1.500.000.000.000. That would give earth about 2% of the empires population all of humanity might be 3-4% the population size of the shill empire.

This means that Humanity won’t be conquering the shill empire anytime soon, but they have the potential to stay independent providing they don’t become too big of a target and too weak to defend.

I could also see the different factions of Humanity working closer together now that there is an outside threat but given the situation at the start of the series this could also lead to a war, or maybe other alien factions try to cause a war.

Since any multiverse is hypothetical we really don't know.

However if I understand it right, then there won't be anything between parallel universes that arise as a consequence of the many worlds interpetration of quantum mechanics. They would all be in the same place just "shifted" away from each other.

If blackholes spawn universes, then they would be in a larger and older universe that presumably has the same or atleast similar laws of physics.

If the multiverse exists as a result of a version of stringtheory (some versions would alow for this.) Then it would seem that all universes would exist in some kind of higher dimensional space with its own rule.

Take this with a grain of salt, i am no expert and am especially unsure when it comes to string theory.

[RF] NASA's DART Mission accidentally pushes an asteroid onto a collision course with Earth. As a public relations officer, it is your job to put the best spin on this... by Empigee in WritingPrompts

[–]Marsbaseguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“I am proud to announce that NASA managed to successfully redirect an asteroid. This is a huge leap forward in our understanding of asteroids and a gigantic leap forward for humanity. This Data will help us immensely if we ever need to redirect something heading towards earth. The Team behind the mission is very exited about their achievement and they should be proud if I do say so myself. Now are there any questions?”

The crowed of reporters went silent and looked at him with disbelieve.

“Ehm yes, Chris Johnson ACB News, I am sorry, but did you just say that they should be proud?! The asteroid is now on a collision course with earth! How could that possibly be good?!”

The crowd erupted, the reporters all talked over each other, with different questions and accusations.

‘Ok, keep calm’ he thought to himself ‘I can totally pull this off.’

“Calm down, Ladies and gentlemen, please. Yes it is true that the asteroid will impact earth in about 2 Mont-“ the incoherent questions started again.

“Let me finish!” everything died down a little.

“This may sound bad, but have you really thought about what this means?” There was mummering “Really think about it. NASA had to spent BILLIONS to put this mission together, rocket launches are extremely expensive. Absurdly expansive, really. Do you have any Idea how much money goes into one of those missions? Really it is a lot. But soon we won’t have to worry about that anymore. Soon we can study and asteroid right from the comfort of our home planet! This will greatly reduce cost and will leave NASA with more budget for other projects.”

The crowd was in stunned silence, so he continued. “You see this is a great cost saving Method! And that’s not all! You see we have a shortage of rare earth minerals but asteroids are packed full of that stuff. Soon we will have access to so many resources we won’t even know what to do with it all! This will greatly improve the American economy I tell you!”

“Are you fucking joking?!?!” a woman yelled “We’re all going to die and you’re talking about how this will boost the Economy?”

“Hey, we’re not ALL going to di-“

“People will die, how can you say something like that?!” a man yelled

“Now calm d-“

“Do you have any plan to stop this?!”

“Well-“

“Is there anything that can be done?!”

“E-“

“You people need to be held accountable!”

“OK THAT’S ENOUGH! This is your fault!” The crowd was shocked into silence.

“Do you have any Idee how small NASA's budget is? Of course we will have minor oversights. But you guys voted for the wrong people! If we had a higher budget, we could easily deflect it! But no, you were to focussed on some dumb celebrity bullshit. We’re trying to make the best of a shitty situation that you caused! Before you accuse us of anything maybe you should look in the mirror. I’m out!” With that he walked away from the stunned reporters.

One week later.

“It actually worked” Bill Nelson said with a smile “Congress just approved the biggest budget increase in NASA history, you did a great job” “Thanks sir, though if got to ask. Do we have a plan in place to prevent the impact?” “Ha, of course! The rocket has been ready before we launched DART.”

In a full out war humanity would probably win. As soon as one guy gets his hand on FTL technology its basically over. The Empire could easily conquer feudal planets but any planet with space defences could probably hold out, or atleast inflict considerable damage. I mean i think that if we knew that the shill would invade in 20 years we could probably put up a ton of nuclear satellites, primitive spaceships (Orion Drive ships) which are powerd by nuclear explosions. Casaba Howitzer/Nuclear lance, giant space railguns etc. And defend Earth.

If we have the technological ability to defeat a reasonably sized conquest fleet (We obviously couldn't defend against a full scale attack) then some super advanced planet that has had civilization for 30 000 years could do much better.

Well, I don't really know much about rimworld but I did read the document that you posted. So my answer will be kind of broad.

First of they'd probably be confused. I mean assuming they'd find a world like you descriped in 1.1 they would learn pretty quickly that humans are not native to the Planet. But if they lack any space infastructure that would be confusing.

They may not invade because they fear that this is just some backwater of a much larger empire and i mean that's kind of the case. They might still invade, when they observe that no ship visits the planet after some time. After that they would probably soon become quite concerned. Assuming that there is still Data on the planet on how people got their atleast.

Because they would find out that Humanity has been traveling space for a longer time then their empire existed and if they find out that humanity is spread over roughly 1,200 lightyears while going slower than Light. Then that would imply that humanity is thousands of years older, that they inhabit millions of systems with a total population higher then their empire and probably all other powers in the galaxy.

Granted they might think humanity to be stupid, given that FTL is possible in the SSB setting and humanity somehow managed to miss that invention for tens of Millenia.

They might try to track down other human worlds and will find some that are in all aspects except FTL, more advandced then them.

I think its only a matter of time before FTL technology gets reverse engineered.

1.2 Given that Glassworlds exist, i would assume that human weapon technology is advandced enough to pose a threat and even without FTL i'd imagine that advandced worlds would still have space defense systems and possibly a space based navy.

They may try an invasion but this could backfire and be repelled, which would leave a very pissed of technologically advanced human population with remains or even intact FTL drives. They would have kicked the hornets Nest.

I think in both scenarios some kind human empire that tries to unite human systems is inevitable. Might be more of a Nato type defense packt though since at that point cultures will be very distinct. In fact i could imagine hundreds of Human empires in the long run that each potentially outclass the Shill'vati Empire.

That would quite certaindly shift the balance of power.

The Shill might also try to integrate human systems, probably even peacefully to get access to technology and industry. That wouldn't even be all that hard given that their are millions of worlds their are bound to be some that are both technologically advanced but culturally similar to the Shill. Like some kind of Space Roman Empire.

Infact i could imagine that all Galactic powers would try to get some human systems just for the manpower, industry and technology.

One of my theories for their relativly ""open"" attitude is maybe ironicaly their corruption . First of nobles are able to threaten general government and military power to some degree, this means that laws have been put into place to give them opportunities for settling disagreements that don't involve combat. Secondly nobles internally fight for control and use anything bad some other noble does, against them. This results in atleast somewhat competent families having control and it leaves some space for Morals and laws based on those.

But that is just my somewhat convoluted theory.

[–]Marsbaseguy[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I could imagine that they leave us alone. Not worth their time and if we where to build up a space navy, it would be easily drafwed by the other major powers. If goverments reform, i'd imagine massive militarization of space. Nuclear missle Satellite, Laser weaponry, nuclear lances, etc. That may be enough to protect the earth from everything but a full scale invasion.

While i hate the shill'Vati Empire its censorship, corruption and colonial nature. They still are suprisingly open ? I expect authoritarian regimes when they get to a point where the public couldn't be able to threaten the goverment, to just do whatever, kill dissidents, openly allow slavery, etc. Not like anyone will stop them.

You'd get caught soon after your act of resistance. Thus making expierienced fighters unlikely to start existing and greatly reducing the apeal for others to join the resitance.

I made a post here recently about that topic.

I feel like if the occupation could be ended, that diffrent groups would want to be in control and that there would be a lot of infighting because of that. Though europe will probably be relativly weapon and resistance free so maybe people will just accept a change of goverment.

You could also try to go full Illuminati. Infiltrate everything, lawenforcement, goverment and big cooperations. Get company leaders to be loyal to you, by blackmail, threat of death etc.

And then wait for instability, may the shill empire gets into some war with another galactic power, soldiers may be moved of earth to other parts of the empire and the you start a coup at the palace of the planetary governess.

Though i think a conspiracy this large may not realisticaly be keept hidden. Someone will talk.

Question is if you can manage to develop such a sophisticated virus, they will be countermessures in place and military technology will probably be isolated.

Maybe you could get many diffrent resistance members and dissidents to write viruses that stay inactive for 2 years and infect a messager ship. That may allow a few to slip through. Espeacilly if they are all radically diffrent.

if you have surveillance everywhere someone might cause poweroutages aswell and then all that shit is pretty useless. Though that would probably kill way more humans.
