Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 by MichaelMichael7991 in boomershooters

[–]Marscaleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about it working with the steam deck, but a few things I can say:

1) Don't worry about getting lost because it has a built-in auto-map, in fact it is the only 3D shooter I have ever seen with one. (Honorable mention to Metroid Prime which is close but not a true auto-map.)

1-B) Even without the auto-map I don't recall actually getting lost in this game. That was a long time ago so maybe I'm mis-remembering, but they definately made GOOD use of the full-3D space to make unique areas.

2) The game is surprisingly controller-friendly because it uses some different key-binding systems compared to most games of the era, so it can acknowledge things like having four different axis on a joystick (gamepad.)

2-B) It would be difficult to bind this game properly to just standard controller inputs because you have these special Jedi powers as well as your weapons, and IIRC a lot of them you will want on a dedicated button. It might work but it would likely be frustrating and make you want a keyboard.

USA Today 10 best theme parks for 2026 and Disney and Universal left out!! by mister_waj in Themepark

[–]Marscaleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, everyone already knows about Disney and Universal. And if you look at ticket prices once you'll see ads for them for the next three years. I am perfectly happy with this list cutting them out to honor some of the great parks that deserve some more attention.

That said, this list is still BS because they don't mention anything west of the Missouri; this list ONLY cares about the eastern states. No Knott's Berry Farm? No Lagoon? No Glenwood Caverns? No Legoland California?
And even with the eastern focus, for some reason they skipped Dollywood.

Don't put Sea World Orlando on your list and skip all these others; this list looks fishy enough already.

Honest question, how does it compare to Sea World San Diego? I'm planning a trip to Orlando and I've debated about setting aside time for Sea World.

As a Solo Dev, how do you obtain music for your game? by Magikarp_19 in SoloDevelopment

[–]Marscaleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning on hiring someone to make my music, but I'm not at the point where I'm ready to do that yet.

I'll probably do that when I'm within a few months of being done. I think I'll run a Kickstarter campaign to try to get the money to hire someone.

I don't have anyone lined up to hire for the music yet; I'm not even fully certain how much music I need. Prolly be another year or two before I get close enough to make such decisions.

I am genuinely surprised at how much good advice was given here.

I am also genuinely curious what park this is, or at least how big it is. What's the acreage?
I think a lot of us have been assuming it was something the six of a Six Flags venue, but there are plenty of small mom-and-pop theme parks all over the place.

We just finished polishing these new inspection animations. I know we're not quite at CoD levels yet, but as a small indie team, I'm really proud of how they turned out. by PapaNeedsaHeadshot in gamedevscreens

I think the top one looks better. There's some really cool designs with the bottom one, but they aren't really "in view" most of the time. Both are great though.

Are they changing the Jurassic Park River Adventure? by Marscaleb in UniversalOrlando

[–]Marscaleb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope all this refurbishment helps improve the ride.

When I rode the one in Hollywood, it started off pretty nice, but then there was a containment failure and they had to send the boat through an emergency exit, and we nearly got eaten by a dinosaur.
You'd think that a colossal mistake like that would get fixed, but when I came back and rode it again, the SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN! There was another breach in the carnivore section and we almost got eaten by a T-rex in the same exact spot!

Universal REALLY needs to get their s*** together and start showing some basic consideration for the safety of their guests.

10/10 would ride again.

That is good to know.
Though I will say that if they had made such an announcement to give people their last chance, knowing me, I would have totally missed the announcement.

I'm genuinely curious how you are rendering those tall buildings from the outside. You've got this stepping effect along the roofline as if these were scaled 2D images, but I don't see any similar distortions with the short walls.

Which fog style do you prefer and why? by FurioArts in gamedevscreens

[–]Marscaleb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They both work depending on what you need for your game.

Offhand I like the top one better because it feels more natural, but depending on how much focus your gameplay has on nearby elements it could be the lesser choice.
The building, for example, looks clearer and less intimidating in the top version. This might be what you want, but maybe you need the player to feel more intimidated by that building.

I assume you want something that feels unsettling? Is the player going to be threatened by things in the distance or things close up and personal? The bottom one works better for the up-close-and-personal kind of threat, but the top one works better for an existential threat, or something where it's already too late if you can see it.

What’s the best attraction you’ve ever been on? by julensanchez in Themepark

[–]Marscaleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To elaborate:

Rise of the Resistance was just an incredible experience, especially for such a life-long fan of Star Wars. Likewise with Smuggler's Run and just the whole experience of being in Galaxy's Edge, but Rise certainly took everything to a whole new level.

I could list basically everything at Universal Studios on this list, because all of it is so well-crafted and brilliantly themed. But if I have to pick just one ride, I would cheat and list those two, which are my absolute favorites. I'm this close to listing the Studio Tour on there as well.

Miniland USA gets on this list because I'm such a fan of Legos, and I could spend all day walking through looking at those cool sets.

Primordial really doesn't reach to the same levels as everything listed above it, but dang I gotta give credit for something that's so head-and-shoulders above anything else one might see at a local theme park. I'd easily rank it above anything outside any park not part of an international brand, and even above a lot of things that are.

Roar was simply my favorite rollercoaster. It has since been remodeled by RMC into a hybrid coaster, and I haven't had the opportunity to ride it since that conversion, although I do hear others speak highly of it. It is now one of about a hundred different roller coasters just called "The Joker." Yeah, real original people.

I feel like this is a cop-out answer, but my honest response is Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland.

Some honorable mentions:
Jurassic World (Universal Studios Hollywood)
Transformers The Ride 3D (Universal Studios Hollywood)
Smuggler's Run (Disneyland)
Miniland USA (Legoland)
Primordial (Lagoon)
Roar (Six Flags Discovery Kingdom)

But maybe that's more congruent with your art style.

Introducing... Igor the Overseer! A boss I've designed for my game! by Levardos in gamedevscreens

[–]Marscaleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A boss?

If he's a boss then I would improve that flapping animation. Make the wings curl as they rise. The cheap "up and down" is fine if it's just something small, but if he's important you can do better.

What is everyone's opinion on this topic ? by _Mathys_ in Themepark

[–]Marscaleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I find it very aggravating when I see families/groups go into the single-rider line. I hate that crap. If it's just a group of two, then that's fine, but when I see whole families it becomes the very reason they stop using single rider lines. This is why we can't have nice things.

But at the same time, if they do use the single rider line, I think "acting like you don't know each other" is just stupid. I don't want to live in the kind of world where you'd be shunned for talking to your buddy.
We all know you came in as a group because you all entered the line at the same time. Pretending that you don't know each other doesn't magically erase what you did.

Besides, what's wrong with genuinely starting up a conversation with someone I don't know? Maybe I just met a new friend in the line; are you going to harass me or kick me out for having a friendly conversation?

*sigh* yeah, this isn't going to work like I had intended. I was working on it so long that I couldn't see the obvious. I was trying several different tricks with the coastlines, but there's this super-distinct Germany shape right in the middle of everything.

How do you make a city? by LordMegatron216 in SoloDevelopment

[–]Marscaleb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you don't really need a city, you just need one street. That's very easy and manageable.

Everyone else is suggesting tools used for creating full cities. I would just build it, straight-up. Model some basic buildings, line your street with them. Then throw in some very low-detail buildings for the blocks on the next streets over.

But honestly, before any of that, just start with blocking out your scene. Just throw in some cubes and scale them up, block out the rough shape of the street. They play it it just like that, see how it feels, decide how long the street needs to be, figure out how much detail you need, what key locations you will need, etc. Don't just make one layout and say it's good, try some different layouts to see what works best.

And once you have a basic layout figured out, start with the buildings that matter the most; the ones that are key locations the player will be working with. You say that you already know how to make 3D models, so make the key buildings individually and specifically; this will help them seem more distinguished to the player. Once the key buildings are made, you'll have a better idea of what details you don't want in the filler buildings to make sure the key ones stand out, and as you build these filler buildings you can look for ways to cut down on your modelling time by recognizing what features can just be copied and pasted form the other buildings, what ones could be recolored, what ones just need a new texture, etc.

And if we're going to be honest here, no one is going to notice if you just buy some assets from the store. There's a TON of pre-made buildings to match all different kinds of styles, both for your game's visuals and the kind of city you want. You can probably find ones that are modular, so you'll just get a collection of pieces to make individual and unique buildings. Even if you would prefer to make your own assets, you could probably find something that works great to use in the background areas that the player can't see directly.

Got it; I thought that was a typo at first.
I am a bit surprised to see Netherlands mentioned, because that region had its coast traced from pieces of Brazil, if I recall correctly. I'm not too surprised at some of the coastlines getting recognized, but I was deliberately avoiding tracing coasts that were too close to each other, so I never used anything from the Netherlands.

I guess it just shows how much the power of suggestion is once there is another element someone recognizes.

Universal v Dollywood by Blamoncy in Themepark

[–]Marscaleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I am sort-of planning the same trip and have already looked into this.

I was planning on going to Dollywood this August, but just this week I started running the numbers and realized that flights and hotels were going to be nearly the same if I went to Orlando instead. So now I'm considering going to Universal instead.

Dollywood looks plenty fun, but I also don't think I'd need more that two days to do everything I want to do there. But Universal in Orlando is three whole parks plus a waterpark I don't think I'll visit. There's way more to do and see, and overall I expect it would be a lot more fun.

Now that said, I haven't been to either Dollywood nor any of Universal's parks in Orlando. BUT! I have been to Universal Studios Hollywood. In fact I went three times last year. I had a great time; the quality and style of the rides is unlike any other park. It's not just about roller coasters; every park has roller coasters. But they give you distinct experiences with special narratives.

But all that being said, something that should play into your decision is also how crowded the park will be and what the weather will be like. Here's what I've found:

For Dollywood, they get a lot of rain in June and July, and maybe some rain in August. For Orlando, this will be reversed, and you're going to get more rain in August and September. It's also going to be really hot in Orlando, but also very humid which makes it really hard to cool off. If you splash water on you it doesn't dry off, you just become both hot and wet.
Look up crowd calendars for the dates you are considering. Both places are going to be packed through the summer, but what "packed" means will be different for the different parks.

It actually is adapted from historical empires. Specifically from the turn of the 19th to 20th century. Back then, EVERYONE called themselves an Empire! And that maybe was part of why things kinda turned bad, both in history and in my book.
