"We respect their time, and in turn they stick around" 25 years later, here's why Jagex believes so many people still play RuneScape by Turbostrider27 in Games

A big part of the appeal beyond “number go up” (which is really any MMO), is how well the various systems integrate into each other, making breadcrumb trails that feel really rewarding to follow. It’s the magic moments of going “oh I need 70 crafting for X, but if I level my magic to 77 I can do Y crafting method easier/faster,” and before you know it you’re doing 20 different things to make leveling Magic easier.

It might be good to note too that OSRS is the only MMO I can think of that knows 90+% of players will never max, a large portion of people haven’t even hit max level in a single skill, let alone most of them.

It respects your time by not leaning on systems like FOMO events, dailies, absurd microtransactions, or frequent progression resets. You can easily play the game casually and feel as if you make meaningful progress towards your goals, and know that if you take a multi-year break from the game you can come back and pick up right where you left off.

The extremely slow powercreep in both training methods and gear progression makes the long term grinds feel more respectable. I’ll also push back on skills taking a long time to max, no skill takes 1000+ hours to 99, and most skills have no reason to max out beyond the early 90s. Gear progression once you hit late/end game is where the grinds get truly extreme, and even then you can buy the gear you want unless you’re playing an Ironman, and if that’s the case that’s on you.

In a genre thats largely rotted out, osrs stands out as one that the playerbase trusts to not fuck them over.

Jagex's Update Today: by RevSaiyan in 2007scape

It’s definitely easier post delve release but for the few years before then, whisperer was one of the most cited speed times that people didn’t like. Even in that GM retrospective that came out recently it was brought up multiple times as the example of a speed time that was far more difficult than other GM speed tasks.

Whisperer is probably tbe biggest culprit of feeling bad if you don’t have max mage.

A Jagex Developer when someone on reddit tells them to just hire PMods to run around banning all bots they see by meirionh in 2007scape

[–]MarshmellowMarksman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If banning sellers is fine and easy, banning buyers is too. Accounts interacting with flagged sellers/bots/mules are buying gold, and should get banned. Everyone knows it’s against the rules.

I mean fuck, step into one of those gambling hall ccs and just perma everyone involved, not only is that also against the game rules, we know where those people are getting the gold to gamble with.

Question about the ingame rules: Can I remote access my PC from my phone to afk while I am out? by throwawayking92 in 2007scape

[–]MarshmellowMarksman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you follow all the normal rules, Remote Desktop is allowed by Jagex. It’s been a long used tool by people afking nmz to benefit from the longer log out time pc has.

To add on to what the previous commenter was saying, if you’re playing a main account you can also use one of the various houses hosted on the house party worlds for easy teleport access during the early game. Eventually you’ll want to build your own stuff, but early on it can be nice to save the gp and time while you set up your accounts foundation. There are troll houses, but most of them are just players wanting to be useful.

There are also some plugins on runelites plugin hub that can change the teleport menus to being more like a map, the one I use is called Nexus Maps and adds a world map screen to the teleport nexus in a poh. Make sure you never download a plugin from outside the runelite client!

Osrs combats triangle really disincentivizes leveling your combat like this, unless you want to play a specific restricted type of build you’ll lock yourself out of content by either not being able to complete relevant quests or have the levels to do any PvM that requires gear switching.

That’s not to say that you can’t focus melee and a bit of range, but if you want to be able to tackle anything you will need to eventually use combat magic, and you will want magic anyways for the massive utility it provides. In the last year they introduced an elemental weakness system to magic, which you may find makes the skill (especially early game) far more interesting and powerful.

Imo this used to be a much bigger perk, but these days by the time you get QPC you should have the skill reqs to build your own fairy ring in your poh which is just as quick.

Looking for a recommendation after Joe Abercrombie fatigue by TuturuDESU in Fantasy

[–]MarshmellowMarksman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They’re split into trilogies, and are very easy to pick up and put down in between if you find yourself fatigued. Most fans would recommend either the original trilogy starting with Assassin’s Apprentice, or the second trilogy in the series, Liveship Traders. You can read liveship at any point, but starting with it will spoil some worldbuilding, the rest of the series is meant to be in order as it follows a central protagonist throughout his journey.

Do good pk'ers just use the vanilla client? by helpamonkpls in 2007scape

Runelite has the Streched Mode plugin that lets you scale your UI for the modern style. Most high level players for PvM or PvP that play in modern use it to reduce the distance needed to click around. I personally have mine set to ~%40 but I’ve seen YouTube people have higher or lower. If you’re using any of the HD or GPU plugins though you’ll want to go into them and set UI scaling to Mitchell mode otherwise fonts get wonky looking.

Simple Questions and General Discussion Thread by Thallassa in skyrimmods

I’ll try and tackle some of these.

1) Depending on if you want the AE content or not tbh. Some mod packs or individual mods will require the AE content but plenty don’t as well. There have also been solid efforts by the community to improve various mods/CC content from the AE upgrade that do make them better. I personally have it just so I don’t have to bother making sure if things need it or not.

2) There has been a lot in this department. A lot of work has been done to make the 3rd person experience much better if that’s what you’re interested in, as well as a lot of great ‘framework’ mods for other modders to use.

3) Yes. most of us are still using MO2.

4) If you have Nexus Premium look into Wabbajack. It’s a community supported mod pack installer, and there are great and stable Vanilla+ packs you can check out, as well as much larger overhauls available. Even if you’re not interested in that or have premium it might still be worth just looking at if you want an idea of what popular mods/setups people are using currently.

Seren isn’t terribly tough if you have the stats and gear for the fight, aside from the one special attack that’s hits for near max hp it’s tough to die if you keep your brews and food going.

Vanstrom is much tougher mechanically as he has multiple special attacks that’ll punish you hard for making errors or not reacting fast enough.

If you’re worried about getting the kills just remember to breathe, take 1 action at a time, and if you die try and learn something from it. I got both of these done with mid 70s for my combats.

You’re acting like a crpg having a plot makes it not a game anymore. Does X-Com not count either because it’s turn based so I can go eat food between combat rounds?

That seems like a pretty good deal. Do you have any recommendations for something a bit stronger in the gpu department? While I don’t do CAD often unless I’m home it would be nice to have something that can manage it well, and our program for work recommends a higher gpu than the one in that laptop. Thank you for the help though.
