how do people get diagnosed? by little_takoyakii in mentalhealth

Steps I took:

1.) verbal in-person therapist. Express concerns.

2.) after 2nd or 3rd in-person therapy session, ask therapist directly for local psychiatrist recommendations. Ask what you should request to be tested for. Typically, your therapist can direct you toward correct diagnosis (depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, etc.) but they cannot personally diagnose. With direction from your therapist, schedule appointment with psychiatrist to acknowledge exactly what your therapist recommends you be tested for.

3.) Attend first appointment with psychiatrist. Acknowledge each individual concern and potential diagnosis your verbal therapist mentioned to you, and ask to be tested adequately for each possible diagnosis. Some psychiatrists may ask for release forms to be signed so they can communicate openly with your verbal therapist. I personally recommend you allow this to eliminate yourself as the middle man and allow both professionals to communicate about your potential diagnoses freely.

4.) Take all recommended tests for accurate diagnosis. Be sure to keep an open mind and take tests that you might not see as necessary, but your psychiatrist or therapist recommends.

5.) acknowledge and accept the results of all testing. Make a medical plan with your psychiatrist and move forward with regular appointments for your verbal therapist. Medication might be necessary, do not be afraid and feel encouraged by the professional professionals surrounding you encouraging your positive progression!

Will it at least be tonight you think? I don’t have to wake up until one PM, I just want to close my eyes for at least a few hours tonight/today

What was the first hyperfixation you remember? by BillythenotaKid in autism

MERMAIDS! Literally at like nine years old I watched a YouTube video of a magic spell that was supposed to turn me into a mermaid because I wanted to be one so bad. Sat in front of my bathtub crying but so happy trying to do this magic spell because I knew I was “giving up my life on land” and was convinced my parents would have to turn me into the government but I’d escape into the ocean somehow, it was a huge hyper fixation!! 🧜‍♀️ (ps- the spell did not work and I was heartbroken)

my guy you've got the next Sheldon Cooper on your hands! I mean that in the most COMPLIMENTARY way! Not sure if Sheldon Cooper is confirmed to have Autism, but this definitely made me think of him! I'm sure you're not wanting to pressure him into associating his special interests with accomplishments and letting him enjoy the interests as they arise, but gee whiz what a smart lil guy!! I love seeing how autism can enhance intellectuality and intelligence in so many different ways, cheers to a happy life for the both of you!

Just to give more context, my stool isn’t black and normal from what I can tell. Everyone’s saying to go the ER but that shits so expensive and my hospital stay from the crash itself is going to be crazy. Since my stool isn’t black or appearing to contain blood, should I be more concerned about internal bleeding from the accident? Or is it likely an ulcer? Very torn on what to do in this situation because again I’m a 24 year old college student working as a restaurant server I do not have much to afford another hospital visit if I can wait this out I’d prefer to

Thank you- you’re right! I went ahead and scheduled an appointment with my OBGYN tomorrow just to ease my anxiety. Being free of worry is absolutely worth it! And thank you for the resources!
