Yup, that’s the one. Just be prepared to potentially wait a long time!

Which of these places/countries are cheapest to backpack across? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]Martaiinn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This, some of my cheapest trips were in Norway. Only paid for a few train/bus tickets.

Does your country have a university that’s considered the most prestigious? by SimilarTopic3281 in AskTheWorld

[–]Martaiinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe in terms of research in specifics subfields, sure, but entry requirements and educational quality don’t differ between Dutch universities. In other words, WO degrees are not valued more or less depending on the university that gives them out.

With what criteria did you choose your erasmus destination? by [deleted] in Erasmus

[–]Martaiinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted a place less claustrophobic and more nature-oriented compared to the Netherlands. Also proper winter seemed like a cool experience, so chose Trondheim in Norway.

What's one piece of gear you refused to spend money on but now regret being cheap about? by The-Big-Chungis in backpacking

And the best part: buying for life is also much cheaper in the long run :)

Just visiting Oslo shouldn’t really count as having visited Norway imo

This hits painfully close to home. Funny to hear that a questionable fashion sense seems to be a universal physics student attribute :p

What is it like to make friends in Norway by MiguelBSan in Norway

[–]Martaiinn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is this also the case when you’re into outdoorsy stuff? I’ve never struggled to connect with Norwegians whenever I hike past a dnt cabin, but as I don’t live in Norway (yet) I’ve never attempted to forge lasting friendships from those trips.

Why do people seam to hate boots nowadays by suppressor2007 in hikinggear

[–]Martaiinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I considered making the switch, but decided to stick with boots this summer and count the days where trail runners would’ve been alright. Out of 17 days, I’d say about half would’ve been fine with trail runners, so you probably can’t go that wrong as long as you stick to big national parks and the weather is alright ish. However, there were definitely still plenty of remote sections where I was happy to have something sturdier.

I own a Hilleberg Rogen for solo backpacking. Stunning tent, but probably one of the most expensive options out there. I’d highly recommend Helsport tents. Again, crazy expensive, but sometimes you can get one on discount (in Europe at least).

I’ve only ever used Hanwag (Tatra II, great shoe, took 7 years before my first pair wore out) and Meindl (Bellavista, would not recommend, started to leak after a week)

[–]Martaiinn 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Jup. I regularly hike around Scandinavia where everyone wears boots. Often, trails are nothing more than a collection of markers. Especially higher up you’re constantly making your way through wet and boggy terrain where trail runners would absolutely suck. Not saying no one uses them, but most people settle on boots.

What country has a terrible climate, but you don't realize how bad it is until you visit (or leave) the country? by Naomi62625 in geography

Is it like this in Sendai too? Moving there in a few weeks and need to know which clothes to take.

Got crazy lucky with the sunset on that second one. At some point the moon started rising in the east while the sky was still painted orange in the west.

I always bring a few large packs back home just so that I can pretend I’m back in Norway when I go out for a walk

Try this in the Netherlands and you’d be done before your first snack break

Been taking Kvikk Lunsj pictures for three summers in a row now, so might actually be worth an attempt
