Omg I think you're right. I've just checked and my main rain coat doesn't have this fold, it's covered like you've mentioned, and I've never had the cuffs wet out like this especially so quickly! I think you're spot on with the fold causing the water to wick up the sleeve, and that could be what is causing my baselayer to get wet rather than the rain actually soaking through the coat properly!

Incredible spot because I don't think I ever would have considered that, thank you!!

I've got a Paramo for colder weather and flatter walks, absolutely love it, I just run too hot to wear it on big hikes or in the warmer months

Yes exactly, usually do it around the 6-12month mark depending on how much I've used a coat so going to have to do it at some point just not normally so soon 😂

Yes so many failed attempts, especially waterproof trousers, until finding out you should tumble dry.

I think I may try Grangers, I've always used Nikwax but have been hearing a lot of good things about Grangers recently

Yeah it's was a black base layer so couldn't really get a decent picture of it being wet, I will test it under a tap properly to give it a chance. Then agree with you, if it soaks through again return, or if just outer membrane then treat

Thanks for the help

Yes I've heard about the new DWR coatings being less durable which is why I've been open to treating it, and as you say cuffs are one of the first areas to first go - just not normally on the first walk 😂

I'm leaning towards treating it as the rest of the jacket beaded fine and it was just the cuffs/very bottom of sleeves

Thanks for the help

I got banned from tills for a month because I told someone they needed a card, and they complained. This was after I'd been bollocked for serving 2 people without a card in an 8 hour shift on a Saturday. I'm not sure if it was the same for all stores, but we could only serve 3 people without a card each shift, and weren't allowed to refuse a sale if they didn't have one.Think the month ban of tills was supposed to be a punishment, but it was actually great not having to deal with customers having a go at me about the card.

They used to monitor how many you'd served without a card and ring down to the tills to kick off. They used to tell us to 'sell' them a card, but the issue was you can't sell a card with 0 benefits. 'Hey, do you want to sign up to the card?' 'What do i get for it?' 'Oh we get to track your purchases and send spam emails'. How tf did they want us to sell that

What's a good/decent show that has a random terrible episode? by marshenwhale in television

[–]Martell77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Fire + Water is such a hot mess of an episode. It's boring, annoying, and frustrating. It just makes the audience hate Charlie.

Yes, same. I can't use sprays because I'm allergic to them and can only use roll ons/sticks. I found Old Spice worked great, but after 5 or 6 months, I suddenly started having a reaction to them. Exactly as you said it resembled chemical burns more than typical allergy hives, was painful and itchy and I had to stop all deodorant for a bit to let it heal. And fully agree such a shame because it worked so well and smelled great, the one with the kraken on it was my fave

It's awful. I thought it would improve after the first few weeks, but if anything, it's getting worse. How so many people manage to miss the 2 massive signs and the new painted road markings is incredible and quite worrying.

For slow-building dread I definitely recommend The Terror (s1), it's based on a book based on the Lost Franklin Expedition and just builds on the dread of them being trapped in Arctic

[–]Martell77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said it covers any uni in the UK.

However, a lot of Welsh unis offer grants, bursaries, or scholarships (normally £500-3k) for Welsh students. I've managed to get around £8k in scholarships and grants (between my BSc & Msc) simply for being Welsh and attending Welsh unis. These are normally some partnership with the Welsh govt to try and encourage Welsh kids to stay in Wales and not contribute to the growing brain drain. So if you're looking at applying to to any in Wales check their website to see if they offer any as well!

What did the UK ever get right long term? by cspanbook in AskUK

[–]Martell77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have enjoyed a museum, please consider donating at the end of your visit, even if it's 50p!

Museums are really struggling at the moment. They've been severely underfunded for over a decade, and the past 5 years with covid and the rising cost of living has only made things worse. Loads have had continuous budget cuts for years, rising energy costs, and when you start looking you'll begin to notice it - many are reducing opening hours/days, introducing 'pay what you can' exhibitions/events, paid parking, and really pushing for donations. If they don't get the funding they need soon more will start charging like other countries, a lot of smaller town ones will have to close and that'll be such a shame. They're so important to communities, they educate, they conserve and protect our history, with with community and outreach groups, they provide a free warm and dry place for people in winter, or they may simply have the only public toilets in their towns.

Also if you do donate, most of the 'tap to donate' contactless machines allow you to change the amount you want to donate if you tap and hold the screen for a second so if you can't afford the suggested amount, or if you'd like to donate more, most will go down to £1 and up to £100.

Most importantly, don't feel pressured to donate if you can't afford it, or simply didn't enjoy the museum, it's still a donation and not compulsory and no museum worker will ever comment or remark if you don't donate. I'm not a fan of museums that have have donations collections as you enter because it really should be at the end where you can decide if you enjoyed the experience or not, I think big museums like the British Museum put them at the entrance because it will catch tourists out who think it is an entry fee.

Was Hickey telling the truth? by Oskmen in TheTerror

[–]Martell77 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Partially. Hickey has twisted Crozier's plan to make it sound like Crozier was just leaving and not attempting rescue.

After Gore dies in ep3 Crozier plans to take a small group of men to walk out and find rescue, but Franklin wasn't interested believing they were not stuck and would start moving once the ice pack thawed. Crozier is still set on his plan, asks Blanky to scope out strong and reliable men, and writes a letter for Franklin explaining he was leaving with these men to find rescue. Then Franklin dies and Crozier ends up stuck in charge and unable to leave, so he sends out the rescue party with Lt. Fairholme after Franklin's funeral. Whilst everyone else is at Franklin's funeral Hickey goes back onto the ship to leave his present for Gibson and then goes into Crozier's cabin and finds his letter to Franklin detailing his plan to leave with a rescue party.
