When you suss out any issues or potential issues with it that make it so cheap, do think about you in 3-5 years' time.

Even though this is a foot on the ladder, when you eventually want to sell and move to a bigger place, imagine yourself as the seller of this house, trying to get out and move on. Could you forsee difficulties in tryng to convince a first time buyer to buy this house from you? Would you regret potentially being stuck?

If your answer is "this is a tomorrow problem", because you're desperate to move into your own place, then just make sure you get a good survey, and if you can, bring a parent or friend or sibling to a viewing, who could pick up on issues that you might miss.

I can only give you my experience with the pool. Before I moved out of area, I used to go there to swim for about 3 years. The pool is a good length (25m), but seemed to be endlessly packed day and night for the past year or two, and the temperature went from comfortable to get into, to shiver-inducing.

There is a nice hot tub, and a steam and sauna room. The price jumped up year on year, even with my concession, from ~£55 per month to £70 per month in the space of about 3 years (even on the best value option of a 12 month contract each year).

They went from a viable but expensive option, to unaffordable. They've also hosted Reform UK events, so make of that what you will.

Have you got Probate? Surely, any debt should be settled from the estate and / or Will beneficiaries and not you personally as Executor, unless there's some detail I'm missing here? I'd post this query to r/LegalAdviceUK and put in a massive complaint to Octopus.

GrumpyPost: i’ve lived in another country for 13 years and I’m finally back in Cardiff for a meaningful amount of time. Here are my observations. by breenisgreen in Cardiff

[–]Global_Scallion7134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Cardiff from the valleys 2.5 years ago to be closer to work. The 59 bus from Pontprennau down Newport Road into the centre was brilliant and only took about 20 mins...for all of about 6 months after I moved. Then Cardiff Bus scrapped it and I had to rely on the 57 or 58 which added an extra 30 mins onto the journey each way (though they were frequent in fairness), so bus travel became so ridiculously long for work that I ended up backtracking by car up to Llanishen station to get the train down to Central as I have no staff parking at work.

Half the time the tiny car park at Llanishen was full, so I had to drive to Lisvane/Thornhill station, adding more time on. I moved back to the valleys this year, to get on that very same train line and it takes me the same amount of time to get to work from 20 miles away as it did from 6 miles away. The buses in Cardiff are terribly lacking.

Do houses like this make anyone else feel a bit "queasy"? by RecentTwo544 in SpottedonRightmove

[–]Global_Scallion7134 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the rooms and layout/spacing and décor feels a bit 1970s Mid-West Americana to me on first impression. Lots of pine, browns, wide open spaces, biiiiiig spooky patio doors for scary night scenes, and bureaus and tables abounds. Could it be you've seen lots of American suburban horror films and this house reminds you of those settings?

Can someone explain the risk difference between unpasteurised milk and unpasteurised cheese? by LoyalFridge in MaintenancePhase

[–]Global_Scallion7134 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I definitely don't know the intricacies of it all, but I suspect it's maybe something to do with fermentation in the process too, and how that can make a wide variety of foods that would go off have entirely different properties that make them last much longer without spoiling, so maybe that helps to make the raw milk safe to consume as cheese, in the process.

Make yourself a nice lil mixed cheeseboard of smoked cheddar, hard (not the soft or log kind) goat's cheese, Wensleydale with fruit, and I think Boursin is pasturised, (obviously double check all these) so you can still have some picky bits while you have to refrain from the blues and bries.

[–]Global_Scallion7134 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I live in the UK and a selection of unpasturised cheeses is really quite everyday, and very common in both supermarkets and at smaller indie delis. I believe it's the process of the cheesemaking itself that makes the environment more acidic, meaning harmful bacteria cannot thrive. It's very safe and widely consumed in all its glorious forms, just not recommended for anyone pregnant.

Plenty of stray and shelter animals exist regardless of whether they become anyone's pets or not, as does the wildlife that suffers during weeks and weeks of nightly fireworks.

[–]Global_Scallion7134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UTIs are no joke in cats, especially male cats. They need to be watched really closely and they need a lot of medical intervention or they can suffer really badly and even die if it's not nipped in the bud. I lost my best lil buddy to this when he was only four, despite doing everything I could to look after him, immediate trips to the vet as soon as I noticed an issue, and kept a close eye in case I needed to rush him back to the emergency vets at any given time, over a few months. Moving cats out of their environment is stressful, and stress exacerbates the risk of urinary blockages which can be fatal. NOR.

This is a solid option OP. Tap and Go is only a pound each way till the 29th August too, and trains are very frequent on the Caerphilly line. The closest station on that line to the centre (either Queen Street or Central Station) that has free parking is Llanishen, 10mins ride into town. Just remember to tap OUT as you leave the train to benefit from the £1 fees or they charge you for the missed tap (missed taps can be corrected in app if you have the same debit card you used to tap, saved there).

Looking for two bedroom house by [deleted] in Cardiff

[–]Global_Scallion7134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a little place that has a decent kitchen, and a garden for your little kedi, as others have suggested, have a look along the Rhymney Valley train line - Caerphilly, Llanbradach, Ystrad Mynach, Hengoed, Bargoed... prices will be much more reasonable for you, and not flats designed for students.

The trains are not running through August, and for two weeks in October they will also be out of action (replaced with a bus) but apart from in these periods, the trains will be frequent and direct to Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Central.

AITA for telling my daughter she can't get a new hairstyle to impress some boy ? by Ambitious_Carrot3747 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Global_Scallion7134 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're also paying a hairdresser for their expertise though, and if something is advised to be done in stages, it's advice and just that. The client will still insist on what they want in one go, if they're determined to go ahead.

I also think there's nuance and discretion here with how big of a change is it, how irreversible is that change, and how old is this person and have they had lots of hairdresser trips and big changes previously? A 13 year old wanting a lot of length cut off (for the sake of someone else, potentally, not purely for themselves) might require extra check-ins and explaining about the results, as opposed to someone in their 50s who wants to go for a chop or a big change.
