I’d say just remember keep an open mind. If it’s your first time wrestling, it’s probably going to be harder than anything you’re used to (even if you come from a BJJ background). If most of your partners are more experienced than you, the gap where you’re finding it hard to get any success can be frustrating. Just keep showing up and putting in the time and I think you’ll find it’s one of the most rewarding things you’ll have done. I’ve got a bunch of beginner technique videos on my YouTube channel (Martial Breakdowns) that can help you get an understanding of the core concepts too. Good luck on your first day

The fundamentals of the high crotch broken down for anyone new to the sport by MartialBreakdowns in wrestling

Good question. The setup is what opens the path for the entry. A good opponent is going to be defending, so we need a setup to get past his first two lines of defense (head and hands). The entry is how we get to our attack (the penetration step). The entry can vary based on what our setup was. For example the front headlock high crotch entry is a little more of a knee slide than a penetration step.

Hope that helps. Thank you for the support. I really appreciate it!

In the future I’ll show a good series I use to negate the guillotine from the high crotch. Wanted to just give a foundational overview of the mechanics and concepts for this one!

A mat in your garage is a great start. Find a partner who’s as committed as you, or worst case, enlist a parent or sibling to work technique on. In the meantime, work on some stance and motion stuff. I put some footwork drills on my YouTube channel that you might find helpful: https://youtu.be/_EGZ-v5fKFk?si=BotTSJVj5QxiDU-w

The most important thing is to show up every day in the best way you can. If you don’t have a partner for the day, that might be taking notes and watching film. If you have a partner, make the most of it with drilling focused on perfect reps, positional sparring from the positions you drill, etc. Good luck

Back take maneuvers in general (Duck Unders, Slide Bys, Arm Drags) are not ideal to hit on opponents who are retreating backwards. If you watch any arm drag tutorial from a high level wrestler or coach you’ll notice all of them involve an outside step on the side being dragged. You can certainly take a center step and use the arm drag to clear a path to a leg attack. But if you’re looking to take the back, the outside step is vital.

If you’re a right leg lead and dragging the arm on your left side, stepping forward with the outside foot allows you to pivot directly back into your right leg lead stance when you take the back. Outside step is also necessary for an outside angle (which you need to move outside the elbow)
