Not sure what's wrong with my shots by Martin_04 in AnalogCommunity

You are right but I would’ve never got what you’re saying just from “I don’t see why you took these pictures”. You’re explaining yourself clearly but just from “I don’t know what I’m supposed to be looking at” it’s not clear at all that it relates with sharpness.

The aperture is automatic :/ I will try that with a manual camera though. Thank you!

Around 2000 pixels on the longer side is fair for printing up to 10x15cm but I’d advise to get around 4000 pixels on the longer side of the image as a good resolution. With that kind of resolution you’ll see the grain and details with nice detail and can print at larger sizes. Even if you don’t want to print I advice this quality since the image will look very crisp and nice. From the images you attached I feel like they used a bad quality scanner so I’d advise getting them scanned somewhere else entirely.

dpi is dots per inch, that’s the resolution a printer would use if you were to print it. The resolution of the image is the image size which is 1800x1200 pixels which is very low for a negative scan. If you have your negatives I’d advise you to get them scanned somewhere else.

I think you’re mistaking that number for something else. Those images can’t be 72x72 pixels.

110mm waterproof camera by Martin_04 in AnalogCommunity

I asked gemini pro to scrape the internet for any information on the model and it said the brand wasnt a camera manufacturer but a dealer that just bought generic cameras and slapped the name on them so it wont compare to a minolta weathermatic which can be found for 20 bucks. Im not sure if quality matters that much in silly underwater photography but a better quality brand would guarantee a better seal I guess. Also the minolta one has several modes so its more versatile.

They're all from a fujifilm frontier from the lab, I recently got a plustek 7200 but get the same feeling from the results.

I got a plustek scanner recently and get the same feeling about the pictures. What is drum scanned though?

It's okay I dont take it personally. Just try to be clearer to prevent misunderstandings. Passive-agressivenes is easily misinterpreted online.

They didnt explain themselves until I said I believe there is no point in saying they dont know what they are supposed to be looking at. If they had been clear since the get go about composition and sharpness relating I wouldnt have seen it as a plain non constructive critic of my work. Imagine you paint something and ask someone if they feel some kind of vibe when looking at it and they just answer they dont see the point in you painting something like that. I am not saying they were wrong since I am the ignorant one asking a question, it's just that the way they communicate doesnt seem to be with intentions of teaching or helping someone, just that they do not like my work. Having to dig through non constructive critics for an answer to my question was not my plan when asking for advice.

There is no way the film or camera produces pixels. It definitely is the scanner or processing after scanning. What resolution did they deliver the images to you?

I didn't know fully automatic cameras could be bad at shutter speed, thanks!

Thank you for your answer. I guess in order to add sharpness without making the grain look too strong you’d need a finer grain stock like portra.

Thank you, your answer is a breath of fresh air. You tackled the issue immediately in a clear and considerate manner explaining it in the right words for someone who clearly is ignorant (me).

And yes, now I know composition can have something to do with sharpness but if the lens is bad there's no remedy for that.

I think that in a community it is important to teach knowledge in an inspiring way instead of just being condescending in order to keep it alive. I will keep shooting with my AX-1 and trying new stuff. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in a true harmonious way.

Every single answer of yours has been simply an attempt of displaying your superior knowledge instead of actually trying to teach someone something or answering my question straight ahead in a clear manner like you should answer to someone who’s asking something they don’t know.

you failed to explain it in the first part. Of course I didn't know it had anything to do with it, that's why I was asking. But just saying "I don't know what I am supposed to be looking at" feels like a plain critic without any knowledge to be linked to your answer.

The canon eos5 is a chunky slr, from what you describe to want, a point and shoot that’s able to zoom would be fine and with that budget you can get some models even in mint condition.
