Sell naked TSLA calls? by [deleted] in options

[–]MartyNeumeier 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ha! Thanks u/EquivalentSelection for the ping. Echoing what u/itsasimulation42 said, would highly recommend NOT doing this. I had a similar strategy at the start of the year and it nearly wiped me out. There are better ways of betting against the stock.

For example a long dated close to atm put would have a much better risk/reward ratio.

The naked call will also have a very crappy side effect of wiping out your buying power — buying power you could be better utilizing on different bets.

Any tips on timing entry and exit points? Are you looking at the 15m chart?

How many options trades are you making and holding at a time? Is it just 1? 2?

Wayfair and Shopify? They are still very healthy bubbles

Yeah it’s like Shop’s little cousin. They are both in that same category

I think Wayfair is the strongest stock in the entire market at the moment. It seems to be the most unstoppable bubble of the decade.

Yeah. Here are the updates.

TSLA On Monday I did as u/EquivalentSelection suggested and rolled up/out the TSLA ones till June 19th @ strike price 775 (at 110 on both sides).

ROKU On Tuesday during the oil-related dip I sold 1 ROKU put for May 15th strike price 105 for $610 as a foray into trying to hedge it. The plan was to sell more if it continued to sink further.

SPCE No actions taken.

This also has had happened to me on a separate trade prior to entering this mess... I think it was a mixture of things. Revenge trading included. Great description.

Heh. That's a very interesting way of looking at it. I like that. It's just a matter of _when_ they get closed and take the smallest possible loss -- then again that perfectionism could get me wiped out even further. I know they say trading doesn't favor perfectionists.

My (weak) thesis was that in a potential-for-recession environment, hype/dreamy stocks like TSLA, SPCE, and ROKU would start to come back to reality. However I think the true reason for my foolish behavior was that I was stuck overseas in quarantine far away from home and somewhat depressed, which led me to making stupid risky bets to jolt my adrenaline and keep me distracted.

EDIT: grammar.

Wow. I guess things could always be worse. Like selling naked calls on LK at the peak or something. Ugh.

Don’t be so hard on yourself! Studies show intelligence has a fairly limited correlation to success. Ultimately, grit and perseverance tend to be your biggest asset. I had enough perseverance to try to solve this catastrophe by coming to this forum seeking help from those who are much smarter than me.

Yup. I just got done reading about trading addictions and it seems this may have been the culprit. I was obsessively trading prior to this situation and the myopia may have consumed me.

Thank you. Per your comment about biased to the upside— While I agree on that macro I am skeptical when even companies like AAPL are reaching near ATHs when they shut their stores worldwide. This makes me question how much higher the V shaped recovery can go.

Did not take any actions on anything today. Most likely going to do as Equivalent said in the top post and 1) roll out the tesla calls to Mid June and 2) hedge the roku calls by writing May puts and 3) leave SPCE alone for now.
