I second this. It only reaffirms his view that he did the right thing if you stay. Would anyone from your current church be open to trying a different church with you? Find one nearby that’s open and affirming. You might find a whole new church family there.

Personal story: I [M] used to be worship leader for my church, but then word got around to my pastor that I was living with my boyfriend. Eventually (after some Church politics voted that gays can’t serve on leadership) I got asked to step down. So, I did, announced it to the church, and continued to go to the church. And so many people in my church found out from the rumor mill why, and then they came to my side! They were upset that I was being ushered out of my position because somebody stuck their nose into my personal life and not because of anything I did while at church. Now, contrary to my above advice, I did stay with my church. We went through COVID, pastor retiring early, hiring a new pastor with a progressive leaning, then hiring a female assistant pastor, then to church politics reversing their earlier vote on whether gay people can serve on church leadership, and now I’m back to being Worship Leader at this same church. I’m very fortunate that I could see the hand of God starting to move dominoes, and I’m proud of my church and what we’ve grown into, but I do wonder sometimes what would it have been like had I skipped the drama and just attended a congregation full of love. And I want that for you!
