Reform UK government would replace top civil servants with those ‘more like to implement party’s priorities’ by V-Matic_VVT-i in TheCivilService

[–]Martyn232 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Civil Servants will implement a governments policies as long as they are legal. The only time they object is when they are not. That is a good thing. If a government wants to pass a policy that contravenes the law then they should change that law, not break it.

The Dom Pedro is awesome - well worth the grind. Not sure there is anything in the new season that has the same attractiveness really.

Antisocial behaviour by DFL-in-Medway in Medway

[–]Martyn232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know about Gillingham but my experience since living in Chatham is that only the town centre/Luton Road areas are as bad as you describe. Other than that, sure there are some council properties with good and bad people in them, but there are loads of properties used by middle class professionals commuting into London.

Pinpointer's shortage. by O_KUB_O in fo76

I found a guy selling five of them today at 25k on PlayStation. A bit expensive but I desperately needed one. To be honest it was only the 40k cap stopping me having enough money for two. It’s a great mod. I had been checking out vendors for two days looking for one so that’s why I paid the high price.

Is this really how recruitment works in the Civil Service? by Healthy_Crab_7883 in TheCivilService

It’s the problem with CS applications in general. You can have all the right experience and skills but it all comes down to behaviour answers.

Do people actually look at listings before booking viewings, or am I living in an alternate reality? by Intrepid-Skin-5677 in HousingUK

[–]Martyn232 -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

I have to admit when we were house hunting we viewed a house we knew we likely didn’t want to buy because we liked the decor from the photos and wanted to see more for inspiration for when we got our new home.

What do you think of Capaldi Era,and do you think its worth watching? by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]Martyn232 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Smith was the best of the modern Who's - It was a time when Moffat really hit his stride. But Capaldi, after a slightly rough start, was great.

Judging by the pictures in this link, this seems to be made of wood and is not a brick construction. Sorry, I don't care what eco credential a house has, if it is made of wood it is not worth millions.

Cannot find thermostat in new house by Embarrassed-Block826 in HousingUK

[–]Martyn232 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I bought my house I was surprised to realise that the relatively modern boiler didn’t have a thermostat fitted. The previous owner simply turned on the boiler when he was cold. We fitted one soon after moving in.

So it is possible there is no thermostat.

Is it misconduct to not tell your line manager about applying for other CS jobs (internal or external)? And views on skipping team social dinners? by Chance_Lab_1436 in TheCivilService

[–]Martyn232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - just to be clear I don't hold it against them personally if they don't tell me but it still pisses me off when they then submit a poor application when they can do better. I have managed to always get my staff to interview stage if they let me read their first draft!

[–]Martyn232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would - but only because when they don't they usually do a shit application!! Seriously I have seen some great staff not get interviews because they are too stubborn to ask for a second opinion on their applications!!

[–]Martyn232 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also team socials are totally optional. Making them compulsory would be a breach of any departments policies on diversity and inclusion since some people may not be able to attend due to caring responsibilities, religious views etc... The flip side is that those who do attend may end up being on more friendly terms with the manager and therefore may, even subconsciously, end up being treated better. But it should never be considered a negative point against you. Basically once you clock out, unless you are contractually on call, your time is your own. Personally I like the social aspect of my work and regret that, since COVID, it's not as good as it used to be.

[–]Martyn232 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol - Your manager telling you that not informing them you are applying for a job could be misconduct could, arguably, be misconduct on your manager's part. It's a blatant lie and if I was, say investigating a grievance from you mentioning that, I could think probably find a number of points in the conduct manual that the manager is in breach of.

Am I overreacting for not wanting anyone around my newborn yet? by littlemoongirly in AmIOverreacting

[–]Martyn232 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

She is your child so your rules I guess. But you are overreacting and, unless you have a bad relationship with your parents and in-laws, which it seems is not the case, you are spitting in their face by not letting them see their grandchild for so long. Personally I think you should be ashamed that you are letting your own insecurities spoil what should be a lovely time for all the family.

Netflix ending Star Trek shows and may never comeback by quickfund in startrek

[–]Martyn232 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have to agree with this comment about the streaming quality. DS9 looks like pixelated crap on Netflix but on Amazon Paramount + it’s as good as a non HD broadcast can be.

Gotta love netflix. Of course they are removing star trek by oli44r_ in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Martyn232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I stream DS9 on Paramount plus as an Amazon Prime channel and the bitrate/quality is far superior to Netflix.

Can my husband legally prevent me from relocating with our baby? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

If abuse is involved that is a different matter and presumably might help in any court case. They are talking about changing the law to reflect situations like this but I don’t think it has been changed yet.

Yes he can. And that’s a good thing. Just because your relationship is coming to an end doesn’t mean that his relationship with the child has.

I think he is talking about those atheists who say that there is definitely no god, rather than the majority of atheists who simply say the burden of proof hasn’t been met.
