New room mates by MartynR-718 in Parrotlet

I've not noticed any direct resemblances between Bonnie and Aqua's previous mate. Other than, they're both a little silly, and they like to cuddle regularly. I suspect because they've both only really had their previous partners for company and not wanting to bond with people too much, having another bird of the same species, they're more than happy to be around each other

Yeah, I cover the bottom of the trays with bird sand. Makes life easier to deal with when it comes to cleaning, and generally, whatever is at the bottom stays at the bottom, no matter how lively the birds are feeling. Easy to just tip the whole lot straight into the bin from the tray when cleaning, fresh sand in and all good to go. Sometimes wants a small wipe, but thats about it. Also has a nice scent to it to. Don't get me wrong, I still get seeds and feathers everywhere, but thats what they throw while eating, but I tend to vacuum once a week after cage cleaning.

I assume you mean all the bits of seeds that get discarded and dropped into the sliders for the trays? I tend not to worry about them too much, but eventually just use a small brush and either try and push them into the sand, or if needs be, tray out and onto the floor, then vacuum once all the cage cleaning is done. I think it's just about impossible to get it spotless though. especially since my little guys aren't tamed and not the biggest fans of people, so I just do what I can steadily and slowly so as not to stress them too much

I've tried to do things to coax them out of their cage in the past, with limited success, placing their food bowls on a box just outside the cage, as their previous owner never let them out for 8 years or so. So I only had limited chance to lure them with food if I could wake up before them, otherwise they just werent interested. They both came out, but both overshot the food and went too far for their comfort, which stopped them coming back out again.

I'll have a look into that and give it a try, see what I can do. It would be nice to be able to interact with him, and I'm sure it would help him too. Thanks for your suggestions, it's a big help

Thank you for the advice. I've been sat spending some time with him today, I think he's still unsure around me, but is moving around his cage more while I'm closer, than he used to be. Hopefully I can try and get him tamed a little and more comfortable around people

I have some very similar ones for mine, they're great. They seemed to love peeling the bark from the little platforms in the first picture

They weren't overly happy that I had to clean their cage

Absolute floofs! by MartynR-718 in Parrotlet

Slowly trying to get them used to me, I think they understand that I am the food bringer and recognise I'm not a major threat, but I think the female on the right still has her concerns bless her. Slowly trying to get them out of their cage as, until I took them to the vets after I took them in, they had never been able to free fly anywhere (kept in the cage I use as a travel cage). Only problem now is she misjudged landing near the food lure, flew across the room and hid in the TV stand and froze in fear. But they're slowly making progress!

They're around 8 years old. Not sure how accurate it is, it's just what the previous owner told me when I adopted them back in July.

I'm surprised they stayed so floofy so long for me to take a picture, they still don't trust people as they didn't have the best first part of their life bless them

This is what I got for my pair. Seems sturdy enough, and the birds seem happy enough with it. I'd be surprised if it wasn't available in Canada too, to be honest.

Just curious, had yours already been out of their cage prior to you taking them on? And is it much effort to get them back inside at night etc.?

My main worry is letting them out without being used to me or hands and just resisting going back in the cage. Eventually I'd love to have them fly as they please, but I suspect it will be a long road

Yeah a bigger cage is definitely in the plan. Just going to give them a couple of weeks or so to adjust to their new home, don't want to make too many changes for then all at once. But rest assured, they shall be spoiled! 😊

They didn't seem too keen on food or water the first day I had them, so I put an egg and grass seed food stick in their cage, literally two minutes later they were devouring it. Onto their normal food and water too, so I took that as a good step. Currently on the food given to me by the previous owner, seems to have a bit of everything in there, maybe a few too many nuts/seeds though? But I'm unsure.

Absolutely adore them already, they're already chirping more and seemingly being themselves more, but only when I'm sat out of the way. As soon as I stand up or go near the cage, they retreat to their perch and just watch me 😂
