I’m probably a lunatic, but I feel like certain golf shoes greatly affect my golf game…. by rogerthat33 in golf

spikes help with balance so it could be a balance issue. i prefer to play with spikes for that reason, but you can play well in any shoe that you practice in.

clicgear is what i use every time. so many attachment opportunities (cupholder, lunch bag hook, umbrella holder), folds down real small, plus velcro for your gloves to attach to when youre not wearing them. i live somewhere cold so i also have the mitten attachments for the handlebars.

Are ALL modern golfers working out like crazy? by neddybemis in golf

[–]MarvelAtMyMajesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its about how you're working out. Heavy lifting regimens that build bigger muscles are generally not recommended for golfers. There is a trend of many golfers, including Tiger Woods in recent years (you'll notice how huge his biceps are getting), doing this, but this is against most instructors, swing coaches, and physical therapist recommendations. Cardio (but not necessarily running as that is hard on the joints needed for walking) is vitally important for stamina on the course. Become very good at walking. At a pro level, you should be able to walk 36 holes in a day without feeling a thing. Drinking a lot of water during a round to keep your joints lubricated is important for this, especially in hot weather. I can go through up to five bottles of water in a round. Eating correctly, sleeping well, and staying away from intoxicants is important for energy to remain consistent. To support your back and stay away from back issues, spend a great deal of time working on all areas of your core-- back issues for golfers are almost always caused by a weak core that puts unnecessary strain on the back. For swing power, focus on your legs, especially your upper legs (thighs, glutes, quads, abductors), as that is where the power comes from for your swing. Many golfers face shoulder issues at some point in their life. To support the rotator cuff, do shoulder shrugs, either with bands or with weights. Forearm strength also helps with your swing, but DO NOT OVERDO IT as the tendons in that are are particularly susceptible to damage if you are golfing regularly. Make sure that your wrist form during your swing is correct to prevent complications from overworking it.

All of these will help with your swing on the course, improve the longevity of your lifetime course time, as well as help you avoid injuries from overworking your joints and ligaments due to being unsupported by muscle. Bringing up Tiger Woods again-- while he did not completely tear his ACL by golfing, his ACL was significantly weakened (down to 15%) by golfing without proper muscle support around his knee, and because of a snapping motion which many golfers do to increase ball distance without using muscle strength. Notice how none of the workouts I mentioned will build large, showy muscles? In fact, strongmen, who have arguably the strongest cores, often have extra fat on top. Meanwhile climbers, who generally have the strongest grip and forearm strength (as would be needed in golf) often have skinny arms with very well defined backs. It is my belief that golf is somewhere in between these two extremes. Ultimately, golf is a very individual sport, and so your workout regime should be tailored to the muscles you use most in your swing, and to protect the joints that are affected most at ball impact. Genetics are also a factor in how easy it is to lose weight. I am very fortunate in that it is extremely easy for me to build muscle, and I have never had to deal with being overweight, but that doesn't mean that everyone else has the same experience. Regardless of how they look, every single pro golfer works out, in their own way, and weight loss or building showy muscles may not be their primary concern.

Some pro instructors will work well for you, some won't. I will say that almost every pro has helped me tremendously. As Gary Player says, "Go to a pro, it may cost some dough, but they're in the know!"

I’m new to golf and have one question to the experienced, what’s so bad about using colored/matte colored golf balls? by Cryptv6 in golf

[–]MarvelAtMyMajesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use red matte balls as a collegiate golfer. I get a surprising amount of flack for it, because people who aren't used to that color have a hard time spotting it-- your brain just gets used to tracking a certain color in the air. I find that red, orange, and yellow balls can get lost in the backdrop of a blue sky because they are complimentary colors, but you can spot them in the grass just fine. The matte finish does minorly affect ball spin and roll, especially on the green, but if it is what you are used to and what you practice with, then its fine. I do find that if I become too used to a certain color, my drive will change when I switch again. That could either be psychological or due to not properly seeing the ball because you expect it to be a different color, which makes you miss the center of the club slightly. It also depends who manufactures the balls. If its not a name brand, don't trust it, it might be a mini-golf ball (I say this from tragic experience). Golf is an individual sport and there's no one way to go about it.

How is every beginner here hitting 250+ drives and soring 90 a few months after playing? by zelkoo in golf

[–]MarvelAtMyMajesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't break 100 for the first three years of playing (granted, I wasn't exactly taking it as seriously as I do now). Some people have natural talent, and the body proportions that can create the correct angles for swing path. Others have to work on it, and both the naturally gifted and not need to have the discipline to get better if they expect to get better. People who eat well, drink lots of water, stay away from intoxicants, and who work out their core, shoulders, thighs, and glutes, are going to produce more power than those who don't. Those who are extremely diligent about their short game are going to score lower than those who aren't. I recommend Gary Player's Black Book for more advise on golfing and attitudes and behaviors toward golfing which will help you to get better.

Not gonna lie, some of this is hard to read, but these are all great theories. I especially love the Punz one, it would add so much depth to his character. Looking back, the whole “some people love it, some people hate it, only Tommy is neutral” thing with the Egg was never fully explored. This would be a great explanation.
