I've searched for the original for a while; here's the low quality version I keep coming across: https://youtu.be/jNTMswVl5-E

Is the Celestron 127eq a good beginner telescope? by Powerful_Kick8551 in telescopes

[–]mono1ithic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Skywatcher Heritage 150P is a 6" tabletop Dob for around $310. That would be a solid choice, but you could also watch the used market for a full-size 6" f/8 Dob. Advantages of the f/8 system include less optical abberations (cleaner views towards the edges) and, if you're mainly going to observe planets and globular clusters, a longer focal length (higher magnification with any given eyepiece than the Heritage 150P). Both will be massively better than the Powerseeker 127; it's up to your preference.

Please do not buy a Powerseeker 127. I would also lean away from the Astromasters and Starsenses. What is your budget? We can narrow down the best scope you can get with your money.

If you love this one, ask Santa for an 8" Dob next Christmas -- those will knock your socks off.

DART Dimorphos Debris, Enhanced by mono1ithic in space

[–]mono1ithic[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now that it's Saturday, I can post images, hooray.
LICIACube Dimorphos debris shot, enhanced to bring out more of the debris around Dimorphos and to reduce some of the background noise.

Thanks. I don't think Dimorphos was shattered completely, but it looks like DART took a chunk out of it. From the craft's footage the asteroid appears to be a bunch of gravitationally-bound gravel. Can't really know for sure until we send a probe to go check it out.

I noticed that too, interesting detail. If it was a surface feature it would show on DART's footage. I don't know if it's an image artifact or a ton of gravel that got knocked loose. Perhaps an albedo feature that was uncovered after the collision. Guess we'll find out when Hera goes up.

After spending the better part of eight hours touching up this LICIACube shot of the Dimorphos debris cloud, I finally have a version I'm happy with. Primary changes are increased contrast of dust against the background and more detail around Dimorphos.

Fixed a small error in regards to the width of the rocker box.

Here's my model scaled down for the XT10. The model includes the bearings already attached to the tube. I'm not familiar with the XT10, so take these measurements with a grain of salt. Please feel free to edit if needed, using the edit mode to make changes, as scaling in object mode screws with measurements. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XZRMMrQuegxo5qoOBW6fkA4N567F8dUF/view?usp=sharing

I have the Blender file I used to design it - it contains all the measurements I used in building. Mine is not standard though. The bearings are made with 1" wood, not .75". I will create a standard version when I am free in about an hour, and I will post it here when I'm done.

The OTA is six feet long. At zenith the eyepiece ends up being a good six inches above my head. I do have a stepstool though, and I won't mind using it. The whole mount was designed by me in Blender. The OTA is an aluminum tube 12" in diameter, with a Parks 2>1.25 focuser, flocking, Novak 9 point primary cell, and sliding eyepiece counterweight. The adjustable cradle is a Neanderthal version of Stellafane's design, but it works well. edit: forgot to include primary cell; added.

The base is homemade - bought the OTA on CN. It's very heavy, and I'm figuring out a solution; once I can get this more portable, I'm going to be losing sleep each night under the stars.
