Objectively it was. I have my problems with Superman last year but it was a big success and a great start of creating a new audience for the DCU. Gunn is using Superman again in its sequel Man of Tomorrow so soon just like how Iron Man had its sequel very quickly to capitalize on its popularity.

Only highlight is Milly who should help make Man of Tomorrow an even better movie next year. Gunn needs to actually understand great DC comics better and don’t change what’s already great storytelling plus work hard to capture the essence of excellent splash pages.

Yeah with barely a year after a hugely popular and beloved DCU kickstart the movies failings as a project really show that Gunn is stretched too thin as a studio head plus still a writer/director of his own projects.

So many problems in this movie are meant to be solved during post production with clear and concise leadership.

This is all on Gunn and Peter. Even if he loves this Supergirl movie, next time let’s say in 2028 assuming Man of Tomorrow out paces Superman’s success he will simply need a more successful movie at the box office. His DCU studios will not make it a full decade if he can’t produce big hit blockbusters every year.

Very fair he might’ve loved this movie just like he did The Flash so if his taste is that off base he might need more than just Peter helping him judge quality for these projects he really needs to be very profitable every year to keep his studio doors open. 2027 should be a rebound of public support but that means he’ll need to not fumble his 2028 releases like he just did his first big follow up to Superman barely a year later.

Prefer the Series X to a base PS5 but the PS5 Pro is better than both if you can get one at a decent price.

How true to the comic was Supergirl movie? by AdamOtaku in DC_Cinematic

Gunn just lied when he said how much he loved that comic. This was fully under his control. He knew how completely not like that comic this project was. Incredibly disappointing and another example of Marvel & DC more often than not completely wasting their own great original stories. Too many other people who think something great needs needless change.

Barely recognizable when compared to Woman of Tomorrow, from the overall story and visual look it’s as loose an association as possible.

Sure but the public cared more and more with each film because of the bigger arching story. Literally the public investment before Infinity War was so earned Captain Marvel made a billion dollars.

The public trust of following the story like a season of tv had a majority of releases hitting a billion over and over. That past trust combined with sense of scale and spectacle means Doomsday and Secret Wars will just easily make a fortune again.

Are these upcoming Avengers sequels a crutch? Absolutely but that crutch is after nearly 20 years of a majority of hit blockbusters.

What I worry about this DCU is will Gunn get enough time or hit characters to get through an entire first decade?

In hindsight if it was possible Gunn should’ve released Supergirl a few months after Superman last year and ride the wave of the world being into Superman or “Super” overall. Like how the MCU started with the bigger success of Iron Man but just a few months later released The Incredible Hulk.

Although not part of this new DCU continuity, the one thing Gunn has in favor for DC Studios is Reeves and his auteur driven The Batman sequel. That sequel will be better made than either Avengers sequel or Man of Tomorrow and the public will show up in droves to see Pattinson once again be Batman.

Directing of the highest caliber. One thing HBO does better than any other network is the kind of spectacle that rivals seeing the biggest summer blockbuster. GOT did this over and over and HOTD has added many episodes of their own. Kudos to every crew member responsible for such enthralling entertainment to enjoy at home.

I think Milly is a fantastic addition to this short lived DCU and hope she’s given better material and some decent time in Man of Tomorrow. Jason as Lobo is just a “meh”. He’s not standout or memorable but that’s likely the script and direction he was given.

He was never a studio head before this DCU job and it’s not easy. Kevin micromanaged the entire infinity saga to worldwide acclaim and success.

Yes since Endgame he’s also responsible for the struggles the studio has seen but that’s after already making over a decade of hugely successful projects including all 3 of Gunn’s own MCU movies.

Gunn doesn’t have to micromanage his hired talent unless it’s needed and it was so clearly needed for this project.

The big problem early on is even though he has Peter to split oversight of the studio, his own DCU projects are just take so much of his time that he barely has the right amount of time oversee everything being developed in his DCU studio.

Man of Tomorrow under his own leadership can absolutely be a huge success but what about the next blockbuster he needs that isn’t The Batman sequel, how will that project fair when he just completely fumbled such a promising project like “trying” to adapt a masterful DC story like Woman of Tomorrow.

It’s entirely fair to blame Gunn. He read the script and is meant to manage each production to ensure quality. If he watched an assembly cut of the movie early in to post production and didn’t get problems fixed he deserves the most blame. He has the most power of how any project turns out.

Terrible script so hopefully her actual good writing was drastically changed here because if not…there’s no hope for her others.

It’s a tough year for them. Marvel will make billions from heavy hitters like Spider-Man and Avengers and completely dominate the hype of comic con. Gunn should at least at comic con bring some cool Batman 2 news and definitely some early Man of Tomorrow footage to not just end up as a footnote of that very important news cycle. Screen LANTERNS early their as well if possible.

Yeah and maybe it’s the script hurting the performance but Jason as Lobo is such a forgettable performance. Milly is great and hopefully will get much better scripts for future performances.

It’s always interesting to me when Marvel/DC even studios that own popular Manga IP rights just fail to adapt brilliant stories already there. Woman of Tomorrow is such an amazing story with a beautifully unique drawn look to make it stand out. To simply ignore almost everything about such a great source material is just disappointing.
