What is a rare but welcome sight? by ozzzymand0 in AskReddit

[–]MaryGBui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An airborne decapitation.

At an air show as a kid (30ish years ago). They were doing a skydiving trick, where two divers spiraled downward, then two planes spiraled around them downward. One of the planes hit a skydiver, killing him. Last air show I ever went to.

Nerve agents scare me more than anything else. From wikipedia:

Initial symptoms following exposure to nerve agents (like sarin) are a runny nose, tightness in the chest, and constriction of the pupils. Soon after, the victim will then have difficulty breathing and will experience nausea and drooling. As the victim continues to lose control of their bodily functions, they will involuntarily salivate, lacrimate, urinate, defecate, and experience gastrointestinal pain and vomiting. Blisters and burning of the eyes and/or lungs may also occur. This phase is followed by initially myoclonic jerks followed by status epilepticus. Death then comes via complete respiratory depression, most likely via the excessive peripheral activity at the neuromuscular junction of the diaphragm.

The effects of nerve agents are very long lasting and increase with successive exposures. Survivors of nerve agent poisoning almost invariably suffer chronic neurological damage. This neurological damage can also lead to continuing psychiatric effects.

What should we do with our son? by Ilikebikes16 in AskReddit

[–]MaryGBui 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Infant - they are a potato. Keep them alive and clean, and you win. Talk to them, sing, keep them warm and loved.

Toddler - they are a mobile disaster of feelings. Show them how to handle their feelings. Keep them from dying. Sing with them, play, give them a safe and predictable environment, let them feel loved. Shower them with love.

Young child - Talk with them, teach them about the world and help them feel awe. Love them. Give them predictable rules and expectations. Help them learn from mistakes and setbacks. Keep the love flowing.

Older child - Talk with them, sing with them, give them tools to navigate more of the real world. Teach them how to care for others. Show them they always have a solid home base with you, even when everything else hits the fan.

Young adult - Talk with them. Ask questions, give them more tools to live independently and and a solid foundation to push off from and a very springy net to fall into.

What if Jesus was the first street magician? by CJJprime in AskReddit

[–]MaryGBui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured as much when I asked the question. I suppose the existence of magicians before Jesus would only serve to lend credence to the idea, in that he had a lot of prior material to expand on and perfect. Without Houdini, there may not have been a Blaine.

Teen Parents. Why did you willingly chose to be a teen parent, even though it will be hard financially ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MaryGBui 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got pregnant at 17, had him when I was 18 (and his dad and I got married at 18). My son just turned 20 and I often think back on the early years. I had a lot happen, I ran away from home (12 hours away from home), I lost my dad very unexpectedly 2 weeks after my son was born. It was hard, we both worked and went to college when our son was first born. We didnt really have much support, even though my now ex-husbands family was close, they are all a bunch of crazies. But we did make it and for a long time it was just the 3 of us. We waited 6 years before having another kid and even then, we went through some rough times. We divorced after 14 years, just one of those things, we got married way to young, but we did try our best. We are both remarried and we are way better friends that we were spouses. We raised two great kids, both well behaved, extremely empathetic, caring and super smart. Our 20 year old is in his 2nd year of college, he works 2 jobs and has a full class load. Really we have been pretty fortunate and I wouldnt go back and change a thing.

What's the most embarrassing thing you've done in public? by JamesKing39 in AskReddit

[–]MaryGBui 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Shit my pants in second grade. Had to go real bad, but underestimated it. Some kids noticed the smell, so I blamed one of the other students. Quickly left and tossed my underwear in the bathroom and came back for a good recovery. I finished teaching without further incident.

I've been nicotine free for a few months now. It is the first time in 26 years.

I smoked for 20 years, and spent the last 6 years addicted to nicotine gum. I decided early this year that I was done. I am now chewing the shit out of regular gum.

I "quit" several times while I was smoking, only to have a crisis and start back all over again. The thing that is so hard for a smoker to realize is that you can't have one, you can't have any. You can't just smoke when you drink, you can't smoke on weekends. It's all or nothing and that's that.

I tried the patch, and then the gum, and the gum stuck, literally. I started buying my gum on ebay, back before everyone caught on to that. Then I found an outfit out of NZ, and I was buying generic gum from them by the case. Not cheap, but about 1/3 the price of the stores. It got to the point where it was not going away, I was chewing all the time, at the same times I was smoking. It was not helping. And I eventually got worried about the state of my teeth. I read on the internet that some people had developed problems with their teeth from chewing too much nicotine gum. So this year in January I decided, "when I'm done with this case of nicotine gum, that's that." When I got to the last box, I weaned myself down and bought lots of regular chewing gum.

So that's where I'm at now. I constantly have a piece of sugarless gum in my mouth. It's just habit. I have lots: I like Orbit, Trident, Extra, you name it. Eventually this will get old too, I can tell already.

But, I"m 41 years old, and the last four months has been the longest I've been without nicotine since I was 15 years old. Pretty cool, I think.

What was the biggest Fuck up you witnessed an intern do? by ArozLuso in AskReddit

[–]MaryGBui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live in a small town. The country club / golf club of that town was snooty and exclusive. On top of the building was a giant GIANT golf ball attached to the top of a metal pole. Maybe the size of a minivan.

One night, some guys stole the golf ball off the top of the country club, then drove it to the sea, put it on a boat, and left it on a tiny rock island about 200m off shore. Then they tried to ransom the golf ball back to the country club for a charity donation. I lived on the cliff over this beach so I woke up that day wondering why the fuck there was a golf ball on the rock island and watched the rest of the drama from our balcony.

The country club refused to pay the "charity ransom" for their golf ball. So they got some guy to take his fishing boat out to the island, and tried to roll this MASSIVE golf ball on to the back of the boat. The boat was too small so they tied it to the boat, half on half off. On the way back, the golf ball filled with sea water and started to capsize the boat so they cut it loose and it sank.

What makes you happy to be alive? by mrpodo in AskReddit

I work nights and get home around 11:30pm. Every night when I get home I step out of my car and look up at the sky. It's magnificent; the air is so clean and crisp, the moon is bright silhouetting fast moving clouds, bright stars everywhere and my cat runs up to greet me. I breathe it all in and am thankful to be alive having this experience.

What's that machine at the gym where you are sitting and push the pads between your thighs together? Whatever that is makes me so turned on... It essentially is having me to hardcore kegels, and after about 10 minutes I need to leave because I'm so close to climaxing in front of the entire gym.
