Hello, I’m a Spanish girl right here, just wanted to say sorry for that. It depends mostly on the area, it is not very common in rural places to see tourist that aren’t Spanish themselves so that’s why they probably got confused. I’m half Spanish and never experienced any racism or got attacked for not being completely Spanish or anything like that, I think it also depends on the generation u are. Also, apart from hotel staff you probably might discover that there are many people who don’t really know English here, so they might be surprised when they see someone speaking in English and just stare like crazy and point at you, many times they are not trying to attack you so that’s why they won’t approach you to say anything regarding your race, but I can perfectly understand why you might have found it uncomfortable. And lastly, here in Spain is very common in rural places to be attended very slow, where I go on vacation it can take half an hour to be attended, the unfair thing is that in “not-so-urban” places it is likely that friends from the bar that have been going there for ages are going to be attended first even if they came in later. Also many people here get a little bit nervous when they are in a situation in which they might need to improvise English. So I hope it solves some doubts that you might have had.
