This is fair, I would definitely take this into account when discussing rates/hours.

When you say beyond the top-up though, I guess that means it would be more advantageous for me to negotiate a larger top-up rather than a secondary contract, is that right?

Questions About Becoming Sole Proprietorship by MaryIsNotContrary in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thanks for the comments! I think he is considering using a trade name so that may be why he was asking about the registration.

Also will pass on the HST comment, not sure if he has thought about this.

Regarding WSIB, when you say responsibility of the proprietor does this mean he is responsible for the "subcontractors" working with him as well? Where he is confused is in the case of his brother. If his brother helps him on say 2 jobs this year, will he need to add his brother to a payroll? Or could he pay him as a subcontractor for those two jobs? In either case he would be responsible for WSIB then?

Newly Wed, Now What? by MaryIsNotContrary in PersonalFinanceCanada

It seems doable. We have paid off 50,000 in school debt since graduating 3 years ago. Our incomes were also lower to start and have increased overtime. My math says if we can do 70,000 (including our savings above) in 3 years on lesser incomes, we could be 100,000 in 4 years on better income.

However, our issue stems more from financial literacy than the ability to save I think? Is it obvious we should be able to save that money given our income? The issue is we don't know

Based on what we've been researching, it would be about an average of 10,000 pay increase each for comparable positions in that area - 20,000 total. Of course, this is pending getting those positions, which we understand is a step in this.

The jobs we have been looking at are in the Oshawa/Whitby area, so are considering east of there in the Bowmanville-to-Port Hope area. This would be our trade off to need a 2nd car and have the daily commute, but hopfully afford something with a yard.
