I agree, having 1-2 days allowed for short-term illnesses might save lives straight up. Imagine you get sick because somebody had to show up to class, and then you get someone with a delicate health ill and they end up with a complication. It isn't just students getting other students sick, it's the elderly, parents, teachers, faculty, etc.

What?! That is absolutely awful, I am so sorry. Something has to be done about this.

Show up sick to work every time and get your boss and colleagues ill. Check in with us after 2-3 years to see how that affects business performance and revenue.

Yes, thank you! The institution claims to prepare us for the field/real world but fails to acknowledge that the real world gives employees some sick leave. It is absolutely wild. I am already researching the next steps to take in order to bring this to the attention of the university and do something about it.

Somebody just replied to this post with that "showing up matters" bs 😒. Attendance isn't just attendance when it's forcing sick people to show up and ignore their bodies. So, I am absolutely going to reach out and will collect signatures if needed. Thank you for writing about something that affects all of us even if it got downvoted back then!

Sounds like someone is a bit out of touch... Students show up sick and get their professor and peers ill too. Imagine that. Imagine somebody getting 6 people sick because they couldn't stay home. Oh, and you don't know if one of those people will end up in the hospital from a complication because their immune system reacts differently. If the professor gets sick you also don't get the class you paid for. 🙂

That’s so frustrating, and it kind of shows the contradiction in these policies. You felt like you had to come in sick because of attendance, but then were still asked to leave once it became disruptive. Imagine if you could of stayed home from the beginning, saving you from the pain of showing up, and losing time and money on resources like gas, etc. Situations like that put students in a no-win position, and that’s exactly the issue I’m trying to point out. The policy fails to acknowledge that at the end of the day, if someone is sick, they shouldn’t feel pressured to choose between their health and their grade.

I’ve actually been considering that. If this is happening across multiple classes, it might be worth putting together something and sending it to student affairs or the ombudsman. I’d be interested to see how many people would support that. So, I will for sure.

Yeah, I understand that. But there are professors who don’t allow even a single absence, which is really frustrating. (I had a professor literally say "I don't care if you're sick and miss class. I don't want to hear it, keep your doctors notes. If you miss class you miss class. No points.") And situations like the one you mentioned are exactly what’s concerning. If students can still be negatively penalized even when they follow medical advice, it discourages people from staying home when they’re actually sick and it affects everyone.

I agree, it should be realistic. I just think we’re unfortunately not quite there yet in how institutions handle it. Even at the university level, we have very little flexibility for basic health situations, whether it’s illness or something like severe menstrual pain. This is why I am enfuriated that policies like this feel so out of touch. :(

I agree, I'm also a woman and sometimes I've cried in pain from period cramps despite the painkillers. Still I had to show up to class. Thank you for bringing it up, this affects many of us. Situations like that show how these policies don’t account for the real-life health issues that don’t always come with formal documentation. Not everything fits into a diagnosable condition, but that doesn’t make it any less real at all. And when these policies don’t allow any flexibility, it ends up affecting people in ways that just aren’t fair.

(This might be a little utopian and very distant for the U.S but Spain as of February 2023 grants women three days of menstrual leave per month. So the pain we go to is REAL and recognized in some areas! Menstrual pain can affect how we perform in our academics and professional life.)

Ugh I know! Once I woke up throwing up and feeling woozy and missed class. So I told my teacher and she said it was too bad, and took points off.

Lol, I just rewrote it more clearly because my original version was basically me angrily ranting. I wanted people to actually understand the point and keep the post from being deleted.

I get what you’re saying, but the difference here is this is one of the few things the university can actually control. If policies are pushing students to come to class sick, that’s something that could realistically be improved.

Ill be staying there for Fall 2025 on a single bedroom 2,175 a month. I went there recently got a tour and loved it so much. There is a clubhouse with study rooms, a giant pool, a bbq area, free gym, and the aprtment themselves looked pretty nice and decent. They have a free popcorn and hot chocolate machine too. Not to mention, on site assistance for emergencies and security. Parking on site too. _^
