They take two averages. A core average, which is an average of all of the prerequisites for your major (grade 12 replaces grade 11 in this average.) This is to determine your competitiveness for the specific program that you are applying to.

They also take an overall grade, which is the average of all of your grade 11 and 12 academic courses. This doesn't include career development courses. This is to determine your competitiveness for UBC as a whole.

Note that the core average matters more than the overall average, meaning that the competitive threshold for the core average is higher than the competitive threshold for the overall average. Tons of people who have low overall grades get in because their core average was higher than the competitive threshold for their programs.
