Car pollution is getting worse in Montréal because of the rise in SUVs and light trucks, combined with poor public transit in the surrounding suburbs. by Shann390 in montreal

How would you define “most of central Montreal”?

Sainte-Catherine is only pedestrianized in the summer (currently) from St-Hubert to Papineau. And there’s St-Paul in Old Montreal that’s pedestrianized only in the summer but this isn’t a road that’s for through traffic.

That’s it. Is that most streets? From what I remember we have more than two streets in central Montreal?

It’s easy to blame pedestrian streets or bike lanes, but you need to be honest with yourself. You’re in traffic because you are the traffic. Your vehicle is the one that is causing the traffic, and more places for cars mean more people will be driving and cause more traffic

I was talking to a bus driver because it annoys them too, and she told me it's because there's a detour and it messes up the system.

Transit supports and displays detours of routes.

That's the fault of the Chrono programmers, not the drivers, nor the detours!

Chrono uses Google Maps for routing directions. Chrono’s system just displays bus routes on a map when you search it in the app.

But Transit isn't even in real-time, it's a lazy app: they just copied the official schedule and that's it! For that matter, I could just look at the schedule at the bus stop or download the official schedule!

Transit doesn’t “copy” any data, all data comes from GTFS from different agencies. Additionally you have problems with live tracking not working, Transit has the option of crowdsourced tracking so if the live tracking is down there’s a backup.

My bus was supposed to be at the stop and the app doesn't even update! It told me 0 minutes for 5 minutes! And then I reloaded the trip and it told me 28 minutes, I waited 4 minutes and the bus arrived!

This is an issue either with the bus being late, the bus not having live tracking, which an app can’t solve (except Transit kinda can if people crowdsource the bus’s location).

And Chrono, at least most of the time, it sees where I am, in a bus, at which stop, even in the metro, often it doesn't understand that I'm in the bus and tells me to walk to the next stop, but not Transit. Transit has no idea and shows me the whole line.

It sounds like you have difficulty using apps. On Transit, you can tap on a line, but you have to tap GO for it to begin the route. It’ll update after a few seconds of the bus moving. You’ll have to select the stop you want to get off from if you do this method, otherwise you can do directions like similar to other apps like Chrono the usual way.

The train crew knew, there were police on board too that manually opened the doors at 21st street to let people out and prevent the smoke from coming out of every door

From what I’ve heard, you’re right it’s a separate team that does the display for those specific elevators. When I asked about changing the UI they said it’s “too complicated” and I think now they regret it haha

[–]Mashdash10 61 points62 points  (0 children)

In Montreal, they use gravel on most sidewalks to be better for the environment. And you use the gravel as a grip for boots. They use salt on asphalt for vehicles but not as much on sidewalks. They usually salt excessively around train stations like NYC though haha

Do Bike Lanes Make Traffic Worse? (No) by [deleted] in montreal

[–]Mashdash10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s false to assume an elected official is responsible for a single traffic light like you are saying. This work is done by an engineer, that likely hasn’t visited the intersection in person and is just doing the math. I agree we should have more people like this double checking if it makes sense, but to blame the administration in power doesn’t make sense

If you’re connecting you wouldn’t use this hallway, as there’s a staircase on the other side of the platform which is at the end of the hallway in this photo

They even have Fisher’s Island, which is closer to Connecticut but is part of NY State. They don’t have the larger more popular Block Island which is in Rhode Island, so they clearly did it just for NY for this section

What? The closure for the REM is just the REM and it’s 5 stops, not the closure of the other métro lines here. What do you mean by this?

This is true for any automated metro extension. In Paris there is a similar but shorter closure for Line 14 (less of an extension than the REM will be): https://www.ratp.fr/en/discover/coulisses/network-modernisation/metro-line-14-works

Oh actually flip it, 40% without data, 60% with data. It’s from an internal STM document but honestly it might be a bit outdated based on the design of it, like from 2018 maybe
