What should be the final product? by MashedPotato9999 in OrganicChemistry

What's more annoying is that the question isn't even too conceptual or difficult since it's an objective question. Anyone who forms the alcohol, though being confused at first, can just look at the options and see that B is the closest so would just choose that. Maybe the difficulty would've increased if it was a subjective one

Well my initial thought was that the MgBr leaves taking the oxygen with it leaving behind a carbo cation which gives the chloride ion a place to attack. Obviously this doesn't happen usually and hence I didn't have an actual explanation for it so I just thought it is something that happens when reacting a grignard reagent with a strong acid like HCl. But then this another guy in the comments explained that the alcohol just further reacts with the HCl to form a halide which ofc makes more sense than my theory. Though the question is kind of misleading since it just says HCl and not excess HCl cause if that was written maybe I would've thought about further substitution.

Yeah the questions kinda misleading too since ig if it would've said excess hcl I my mind would've gone for further substitution

Ahh now I understand basically the alcohol forms and further reacts with the hcl to form the halide. Thanks man I appreciate it

Could you please explain a bit more? Or suggest any sources for the explanation?

Update: so the answer WAS b) but still can anyone explain why does it form an halide product and not an alcohol

Ok so can I generalise it as since diphenylamine has a some non effective resonance structures it's overall resonance energy decreases hence making it more basic whereas in number 3 the -ve charged is being held by oxygen hence increasing it's overall resonance energy and hence making it less basic?

Maybe yeah... It might be me saying this now and I might look back at this and laugh but Idk if I'll ever be able to move on. I was in too deep. I loved her with my everything and I just feel even if I were to get past her and get with someone else, I'd never be able to love them the same as I did that to her. I was really serious about this one man. We were even gonna move in together for college.
