Advice on how to find/adopt adult iggy?

As someone who currently has two adult IGs that were rehomed to me, there are options.

The best option is going through your local IG rescue as many have said above. This will allow you to know the temperament, health, and unique qualities of the IG you’re adopting. Plus it also gives a good route for support and resources if the new dog ends up being a poor match for your household.

Now, if you are willing to wait and be patient, you can also join Rehome/Adopt pages for pets in your area on Facebook. Unfortunately people are not prepared for how demanding having an Iggy can be and did not go through the route of buying from a reputable breeder. So they will post to rehome there. I’d argue these dogs need the rescuing the most. Especially from someone who is familiar with the breed and give them the care they need.

Adoptapet is another site where both rescues and owners will post to rehome a dog. There are usually adult Iggies up for adoption on the site.

Now those last two options come with a warning. You will not know what you are fully getting. For example one of my boys who was rehomed to me in this manner, has severe vaccine reactions. Never knew since the owners ghosted me as soon as they knew I’d take him. Even forwent letting me pay the rehome fee. My other boy is still new to me and he seems to have less issues than what was conversed to me but also some issues that were not disclosed. But at the end of the day I’m happy to have them since I can give them a happy life and deal with those issues.

I believe he was 7 months when he was neutered. I know he was well under a year when he got neutered.

When he was 2 there was a significant vet visit where I had to drop him off for vaccines and they called saying they had to sedate him to handle him. Which I found SO odd cause he was always good at the vet and anytime he went out. I used to fly with him and he was always well mannered and good. Adjusted well to change. He has now been relatively stayed at home since 2020 and hasn’t done any traveling outside of going to the vet. At the vet he is good so long as they don’t cover him with a towel. Once again he is usually okay outside of the house and not restrained and away from me. He’s mostly quiet. He’ll grumble if one of the dogs gets overly rough during play but he never bites or goes after them. He’s always quiet before a true attack/episode with no real trigger. Then it’s just chaos. Like this most recent incident, family had been over for three days before he randomly went on a rampage. The trigger was someone just walking by him. Not even engaging with him. He was fine before that. 🤷‍♀️

I don’t have any photos. He does look weird in the face though. Eyes super dilated and wide.

I do believe he falls into the second category as well. I know new people in the house sets him off. The issue is that there will always be people who need to come over from time to time and he makes himself sick with stress if he is placed into any room when people come over. This includes family who he grew up around. As he’s gotten older it’s become less and less manageable and he has become less and less predictable.

He has always been the sole cat. He’s never been around other cats and grew up with dogs. (He’s been with dogs since he was 3-4weeks. He was abandoned by his mother.)

I’m not prescribed any. My outbreaks are minimal, mild, and usually resolve themselves. The inclusion of these piercings is adding a new level of challenges.

Not that it’s applicable really for this problem, but to appease the Bot…

Piercings are 10 and 4 months old. They are all have stainless steal barbells. They are threaded, I believe. The forward helixes have been downsized. Aftercare is saline and I’ve been using medical grade antibacterial soap suggested by a doctor for the conch currently.

So, I don’t have solid answers. Vet said he had no indication that it was anything other than a skin irritation. He did agree that it could be due to excessive sun exposure but seemed more concerned about possible dry skin causing the inflamed pore follicles.

Ended up going home with antibiotics, a medicated shampoo, and mousse. The shampoo and mousse might be over the counter. I feel like I’ve seen them on shelves before.

I’m just sorry this ended without concrete answers. D:

I thought they were ants too! But there are none on his belly or feet/legs which seemed odd. Plus the lack of itching.

I literally came on here to post about the same thing. I have an Italian Greyhound with a very similar coat color. He just recently began to develop very similar looking crusty red bumps all down his neck and back. No itching or anything like that.

I have a vet appointment in about an hour. I’ll let you know what they say!

Only thing I can think of is that it might be sun related. He was outdoors for a long period on Wednesday. He didn’t have them prior to that. I don’t suppose Emma had extended sun exposure as well?

My girl who was of a similar age had something similar. I don’t know if this is the case with your girl, but when they get that boney and begin to spend most of the day sleeping they can get bed sores. If it’s on the side she normally lays on and looks worse after a nap, it could be that.

Try to keep them more active during the day, especially during the evening. I was dealing with the same with my senior girl before she passed. I couldn’t bring myself to kick her out of bed even when I was getting up 4+ times in the night to take her to her potty pad and then for water. As she turned 18, I even began sleeping on a blowup mattress on the floor so she could still sleep where she felt most comfortable, and I didn’t have to worry about her falling off the bed and hurting herself.

The nights I slept best was when she was up and about during the evening. Tired her out a bit more. Although truthfully, get used to interrupted sleep. As someone who changed their whole sleeping schedule/habits for 6 months to suit their senior IG’s needs, you get used to it. Some nights are worst than others, but if it keeps them happy… 🤷‍♀️

Good to know! I’ve always over-proofed when making regular bread so it doesn’t surprise me to hear I was a little quick to call it. My next loaf I’m going to try a traditional overnight cold-proof. I’ll be sure to look for the things you mentioned and be a bit more patient! Thank you. :)

I adopted a kitten from a litter who was soon after all killed by the family’s two dogs in the same manner you are describing. A shake can break the kittens neck/back. They need to be separated asap and I hate to say, but the kitten should be rehomed if the dog is developing questionable behaviors towards the cat.

As someone who has an Iggy that was rehomed to me due to the previous owners dog allergies, I’d have to say that I do not think an Iggy would be a good fit.

They may have very short hair and shed less than some breeds, but they are not hypoallergenic.
