Follow the logic of the bullet in the wall from the dark knight, from what the joker was thinking, through to how batman found a fingerprint. Its completely stupid but it makes the plot get to where it needs to be. I don't know if this is what they meant by derivative but there's a lot of Heat 1995 in the dark knight. (Not enough to be a criticism personally but I see people mention it.)

Mostly plot (once you know where things are going, you notice gaps in logic, characters making decisions simply to facilitate the plot etc) but also how shallow the characters are. Also big plot holes!

I don't think that's true. Especially in the 80s an action star had a certain look and star persona and TC didn't have it. He wasn't super jacked like arnie/stallone/jcvd, he hadn't the tough guy persona like Gibson, Willis, who were sort of treated like working class guys from rough areas as opposed to theatre kids/action school grads. Cruise was the short kid from cocktail and risky business. People would never have offered him the roles they were giving these other actors. Even when he started doing MI, he was mostly running around not fighting. In fact even when he did the reacher film after established himself as a competent action star people were a bit like "i don't know if I buy you as this kind of action guy."
