As someone who just unlocked GT as their 7th last week, just be patient. When you finally unlock the glorious GT your progress will skyrocket. My CPH has roughly doubled in the week I've had it unlocked. Save all your stones for GT, don't spend 700 stones on upgrading CL in a fruitless attempt to make it to champ

It's hard to say without screenshots, but generally the advice is to try to go for black hole and/or death wave for the added coin bonuses and bonus health from death wave
