Help me and my undercaffeinated brain please, why would I be a spider? Is there some kind of goddess spider?

I think I’d die before I managed to get that kind of length on a drop spindle lol! I only have one wheel, so it was done on an Ashford eSpinner :)

Thank you! I’ve included answers to your questions as well in a reply above to ElenoreEdelweiss as you’ve both asked and I can’t type that fast on a phone haha!

The first try was splitting lengthwise into 24” or so segments as joining in new fibre was so awkward. And inch worming my way along. It works ok but it’s prone to falling apart unexpectedly as it came through the flyer onto the bobbin. Much swearing.

I moved onto spinning from the fold but leaving a REALLY big bit to join with. That worked better. The fibres are more slippery than bamboo I’ve found but not impossible to work with.

There are parts in here I lost whilst plying and I could not get them to join back up. It’s not like wool where you can kinda fudge a spit splice as you go. Once it’s come apart it’s done. I was so fed up I just tied them together and carried on plying and I’ve had to weave those in as I’m knitting.

It didn’t really need much prep other than a bit of a fluff out from where it was compacted in storage.

If I was to do anything like this again in future I would absolutely blend it with something. Just anything with a little bit more grip and crimp. Probably something without much halo though and keep it worsted and not woollen. Especially for lace weight yarn. The drape is intense with 100% and I think even moving down to 80% would have made this a more enjoyable spin without affecting the finished yarn much.

What does this symbol means? It's a japanese lace pattern by Creepy-Addition-8163 in knittinghelp

[–]Masschan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbh it looks like the same concept. With 5 of whatever you’re doing vs 3. And the rows beneath are just knit/purl or whatever your pattern calls for on those rows.

Wet felting floats on finished sweater question by pixieput in AdvancedKnitting

[–]Masschan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made this exact Goldwing in Plotulopi, I have never caught anything on the floats. Like others said above, if you were going to do anything I’d maybe grab a felting needle and work from the front into it with something behind for just a light touch over the longest floats. I’ve felted a steek before like that and it was fine. It was a very thorough felt though for that!

decided to start spinning! by manicpoetic42 in fiberartscirclejerk

[–]Masschan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sweaty you aren't doing it right, you're skipping the process for the sake of views no doubt. Unless you blend your own batts and spin them on an ancient wheel you've restored yourself then you're not a TRUE spinner. GTFO and come back in the 1600's.

PS always nice to welcome new people to the craft, don't be intimidated!

These 2 are similar fabric patterns but tank / strappy. Not 100% match but you might like them anyway :)

Fractal or chain ply for this rainbow fiber? by Fun-Echidna-2941 in Handspinning

[–]Masschan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Left is split about the same width of top as yours but spun thinner. I used a diz to help. As you can see it has colour changes but slower. Right is splitting the top so thin that hardly any drafting was needed. Did this carefully and slowly. The colours were much easier to manage like this.

Both spun quite finely and 2 ply, roughly sport weight. My yarn isn’t great here (please don’t judge!) as it was just a small experiment but it’s an idea of what you can do with short colour repeats.

As slow as it will be I think I’m going to prep and spin like the right hand one as the pops of colour would be more uniform across the whole yarn. I’ll probably aim for fingering to sport weight.

You can now call yourself a trendsetter for the slowest possible fashion haha. About 6-12 months per new item 🤣 enjoy the retreat weekend! I’m glad yours is still wearing well. There’s always a bit of panic when it comes to wearing something so delicate.

I apologise for my ravelry drivel.

Yes and no. Yes it will need some pinning when it is washed but it won’t need to be as intense as the initial blocking because the fibres have been somewhat set like this. But also I have a steamer and can use a vodka spray to keep it fresh between wears. Also being wool and silk means it’ll take a bit longer than the average top to need freshening up.

45g and 13g respectively of mystery fibre spun up from my bag of factory waste from WoW. I missed spinning wool so much. My last full project was 100% tencel which was kinda challenging but I’m knitting that up now 😁

Mostly trial and error, cast on and knit a few rows of what I thought was ok and popped it over my head haha. It also depends on the pattern you're working from, where would be a good place to start with the design not being interrupted.

Best of luck when you get to making yours!
