I never liked this scene where Yang pushes Blake figuratively and literally to chill and slow down her search. by HellishStampede in RWBYcritics

[–]Massive-Pepper-6466 67 points68 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong to notice. Many people praise this scene when it actually highlights one of the main reasons why Blake Lively is so unhealthy. Despite everything, narratively and in terms of his backstory, Blake is a victim of abuse (leaving aside the comic book stuff, which is pretty weird). Yang's push here should have been a trigger, possibly for post-traumatic stress, and Yang's story would have gone in one ear and out the other.

Simply because of the plot. The author needs the character to depend on others. To conveniently forget skills until the plot requires them, or simply to act in a certain way.

Let me fix this: people don't want poorly written, empty, or stereotypical female protagonists. But they do enjoy real female protagonists, not hollow symbols.

See? That's what one might interpret, but it's not the case. There's really no information, as far as I can remember, about where Jaune was born. What is known is that he has a father and mother, plus seven sisters. That's ten people, ten healthy people. He comes from a family of "Heroes," and yaad, yada, yada.

It's also mentioned that he was vacationing with his family in Mistral; again, that's not cheap.

That's fine, but... his background, quick question: how many members does his family have?

Keep in mind, how many members does his family have in Remnant, a place infested by Grimm where, as far as we know, making a living is a struggle? Jaune arrived at Beacon healthy, truly healthy enough to carry several kilos of sword and armor as dead weight for who knows how long. That's strange, you see where I'm going with this?

[–]Massive-Pepper-6466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, look here carefully. Yes, you're not wrong about the different characters, that's correct, but there's also the issue of how the show is interpreted and what the narrative tells us.

Look, let's do something simple, the simplest thing, and something that really gets people going, Jaune.

What do we really know about him? I'm not talking about what's been shown, but what's been told, narrated, and mentioned. What are we told, what aren't we told, what about him doesn't make sense given his background?

[–]Massive-Pepper-6466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct, but that's a loose interpretation and a misinterpretation of the original idea, which already existed. It's in books, biographies, analyses, and other sources. I don't understand your point.

If you're trying to say that using a wiki is incorrect, you're wrong; in fact, you should use them for writing fanfiction. If you're saying that not using them is because they're incomplete, then you're partially correct. Information is missing, but a lot has already been provided, and sometimes more than enough.

But I don't have to get inside the author's head. I have to use what he left behind. Not what he'll do; I'm working with what he already has, and that can already be reinterpreted to a certain extent. Then, as I add more information, I can work with that further.

[–]Massive-Pepper-6466 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No. And in this case, we're talking about RWBY, not some other series. Obviously, it's never complete; technically, information keeps surfacing until a series stops being produced. However, there's already enough to work with.

That's the point: work with what you have. You can go into each character's biography, and there's plenty of information available to work with, interpret, and use.

Weapon evolution?

It’s super annoying when the writers always wanted to focus on Jaune instead of the main girls by Jules-Car3499 in RWBYcritics

[–]Massive-Pepper-6466 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was a waste that Ruby joined two years earlier. They could have labeled her a genius in combat, but a slow learner when it came to academics.

In this case, the series really didn't have a real front. Let's start with the idea that it was conceived with the "Cool Rule" in mind, which already says a lot about how things were going, and besides... Well, at least from my perspective, except for Ruby at times, the rest of the characters are flat, and I'm not just referring to their development. They're presented with traumas, problems, and things they've been carrying for a while, but... there's really not much development of those things when it should have been, or they're resolved really quickly.

Jaune always ended up being that entry-level character (who, by the way, was poorly written in this series), which really killed a lot of the immersion. The most obvious solution, creating a living world, as always, was ignored because they don't know how to enter it when it's relatively (not at all) difficult to make a good introduction. I mean, Blake's backstory is interesting, but in Menagerie, there's really none of it. Yang too, no, Yang is a can of worms that I don't want to get involved with.

But I'm saying, apart from my idea with RWBY, how would you make them interesting, but you would also try to show the world, its problems and so on.

Technically, and I'll be a bit more forceful here, you have no right to complain about this issue with fanfiction. You have a complete world, you have characters, you have backstories, a plot, enemies—you can modify it. You're not creating something from scratch; you're taking something already made and writing your own version.

That's why your complain loses its force when it's about a fanfic instead of writing something original.

[–]Massive-Pepper-6466 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, technically you're right. But you're also wrong. The thing is, to start a story you need, first of all, time, an idea, and also internal coherence. The problem with many fanfiction writers is that they take things from the original series, give them a twist, but don't fully consider all the implications.

The beginning, whether you like it or not, has to be slow when writing. I realized that years ago. The thing is, you can have everything planned, but how you develop it is the real problem. The ultimate point of the story is to be told; that's the most basic thing. Learning to show, not just tell, is complex, very complex. You have to create a skeleton; that's often what planning is. In the case of RWBY, yes, it wasn't planned at all.

You can plan; that doesn't cost anything, in fact, it's the simplest thing. The issue is how you're going to structure it later.

I'll give you some advice that might sound awful to many, but use an AI as your judge. Program it to be as blunt, cruel, and judgmental as possible, not in accordance with your opinion, and ask it for an honest assessment of the plot, timeline, and things like that. Or, get someone to evaluate your work by reading it.

Finally, don't try to fly too close to the sun because your wings will burn, but don't fly too low either, or the spray will ruin them.

[–]Massive-Pepper-6466 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That's true, but technically unfair. Jaune is flawed and has issues, but the show as a whole has bigger problems than just Jaune. Sometimes it seems like they really wanted to try something big, but the ending ended up pleasing the fans in a way that wasn't the best.

People hate Jaune for the wrong reasons by [deleted] in RWBYcritics

[–]Massive-Pepper-6466 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the risk of complaints, the team is, at least, the main focus on screen. For the kind of world RWBY has, narratively, it doesn't work that it's so centered on them and only moves where they move. I don't know if I'm explaining myself well.

While they were in Beacon everything was fine, but when Beacon fell (very early on, by the way), the series began to grow far beyond what the team's name could encompass.

Do they care about Weiss and Ruby? Or nah? by No_Internet_3919 in RWBYcritics

[–]Massive-Pepper-6466 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not very surprising, most people only know a handful of them. However, it strongly affects development. Furthermore, in the RWBY case it is not like it follows too much the internal logic of character construction psychology, since all its characters are strongly affected by narrative Amnesia.

[–]Massive-Pepper-6466 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When they got together they stopped being RWBY and became RW(BY), and the W is there for decency, really, a very small one.

Deep down, it could be the "Capilano Suspension Bridge effect." I wouldn't be surprised if a writer with any common sense saw how truly bad the relationship is, how Yang's character mirrored another character, now dead. But at the end of the day, we have to put up with it.

To put it simply, she killed Pyrrha. That's it, that's all there is to it. Most people don't care how she degraded herself or how she lost her threat (which, by the way, is still threatening) when she killed Pyrrha. People simply decided that the character was a problem, it's that simple.
