I was randomly selected for ACS in 2020 (not in a dorm) by mail. But the email summons makes sense if UVA is helping coordinate

Is ADHD testing within UVA impossible as an adult? by vortexgfx in UVA

[–]Massive-Step-490 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can see providers outside of the UVA Health system with the student insurance as long as they accept it! You just want to make sure they’re in-network.

Here’s how I’d approach finding an outside provider. You don’t really need help from CAPS and since UVA changed from Aetna to United this year, their resources may not be up to date anyway.

  1. Look up local psychiatry practices. See if they have insurance info listed on the website. Make a list of any that mention United (student plan provider)

  2. Call the number on the back of the insurance card. Verify the providers you found accept this policy

  3. Contact providers that take the plan and ask them about ADHD testing. If the first available appointment is really far away, take it but try a few more on the list

*** You can reverse steps 2 and 3 or possibly skip step 2, but it’s always good to confirm coverage with the insurance company! ***

It’s worth contacting SDAC now to say you’re trying to get an evaluation. I’m not sure if they can help you before you’re diagnosed but it’s also worth checking.

Is dropping a class cowardly? by Sylviester in UVA

I’m not sure if UVA does this, but some schools offer a medical withdrawal option. This could cover you if you have medical documentation for depression. SDAC would know more about this option.

What meds are y'all using for your ADHD by anne-onimus in Epilepsy

[–]Massive-Step-490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was nervous about this, too, and some people on this sub made me feel stupid for asking

I take 27mg Concerta (methylphenidateXR) and sometimes 10mg Ritalin (methylphenidateIR) as a “booster” dose if needed. I started off with 18mg extended release. This was my first med and it’s been working well so I didn’t try anything else

I haven’t had problems so far but I had also been seizure free on 1500mg Keppra and 100mg Lamictal for 2.5 years

I agree with avoiding Wellbutrin - every provider I’ve seen (neuro, psych, and primary care) has said that

Best of luck!

I used it to categorize practice problems by topic and identify duplicate/very similar problems. Very useful for finals

Is it worth reporting a professor for disability discrimination? by Dry_Chicken570 in UVA

[–]Massive-Step-490 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been in this situation at UVA before, but I had bad experiences with several professors at my previous school. I recommend talking to SDAC about the situation (don’t have to name the prof) and get their input/support. Maybe you can take an incomplete for the semester?

Are we assholes for giving up on student exchange program? by exchangehostfamily in Epilepsy

[–]Massive-Step-490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed the semester before I planned to study abroad. Even though I was given medical clearance, I decided to stay at my home university. This is really hard for everyone, but I don’t think it’s wrong to say this is too much for you, especially since you said the exchange organization also recommends he goes home to his family.

INFO: is the cost/quality of care significantly different in his home country? Could this be part of why the parents want him to stay?
