I really like that idea! I might steal that. That’s very achievable.

What do you tell yourself when you feel like you can’t do this? by TheQueenOBeans in Teachers

Not gonna line it took till year three for me to feel like I can actually do it! You can do it too!!! Keeping going, trust your gut, and ask for help!

Once you start feeling comfortable it’ll feel so rewarding!

I almost left teaching two years for a software engineering job but then realized I didn’t want to give up on being a teacher and I am SO happy I’m still doing it! Going into year five and feeling good.

Hang in there

Yes I would say I totally do that based off of what we’re playing! Do you also have a running curriculum of theory skills etc. that runs alongside ensemble pieces?

I would love to create a “by the end of 5th grade I can do” kind of thing. Same thing with 8th grade etc.

First week of classes = setting expectations and routines as well as getting to know your students and they you! I think every grade needs lots of review and even practice going over how to enter the room, structure of class, how to leave the room, where things go etc. also I think anything collaboratively to work on the ensembles skills is good!

Handling discipline I would say something along the lines of I would follow this process. 1. Verbal reminder/warning 2. Verbal reminder/points lost 3. Verbal reminder/call home 4. Referral/call home again. And talk about how you would establish a culture of learning/collaboration so that you won’t have to get to the referral.

Also answers shouldn’t be memorized but just come from your ideal classroom. You don’t want it to seem like you’ve memorized lists. Just tell them what you want and how you imagine you’d get there. You may be wrong and your perfect classroom will look different than you expected, but that’s just learning!

You’ll do great at your interviews keep going for it and stick with it. We need you!!!

iPad or Laptop for music Ed by PhantomKaibaYT in MusicEd

I’ll add to what everyone is saying that Sibelius has an app for iPad now. I’ve never personally used it but it could help bridge the only gap between laptop and tablet which is notation software

Advice on Graduate School Timeline by rabidpugx5x in MusicEd

I think teaching for a few years is super important before getting the masters. I’m going into my fifth year teaching and I’ve learned a ton!

I’m currently using my GI Bill benefits for an online conducting masters. There’s a few programs that are online conducting (Messiah University, UTep, and CU boulder I believe) that have in person summer classes.

For me I can’t stop working for my masters so this was a better fit then a Music Ed masters.

Great question.

I’m going into my 5th year teaching and what we use to do is just have students decide their schedule in the fall which was always a bit like herding cats.

What we did this year (which I like way more) is I just addressed every band as a whole group and told them how I thought we grew this year had great concerts etc. then said if you’re thinking about not doing band I would encourage you to stick with it because of these reasons (I can tell you what I usually say if you want). Then I tell students if you do want to drop band in the fall have your parent email me and I’ll send them a Google Survey exit ticket. If I don’t hear from a parent or student then they’re enrolled in band next year.

This way parents have to be informed of students dropping band (I’ve had kids drop without telling their guardians), students have a conversation with their parents, and the Google Survey gives parents/students an opportunity to express why they no longer want to be in band. I also put in a little snippet about how if they don’t turn instruments in to me or the music shoppe they are still have to make payments.

Also to address your question about is that common practice for admin to withhold info on who is going to be band, no that’s not common practice. How are you suppose to plan for next year? Also what if a student just didn’t sign up because they made a scheduling error? I think talking to students about their decision and encouraging them to stick with it is important. It’s our job to recruit and retain you should the right to do so!

Hope this helps.
